AIL Division 3: Corinthians 8 - 3 Carlow

November 7, 2018

Corinthians turned over Carlow at Corinthians Park on Saturday in atrocious conditions. The home side playing the first half with a gale at their backs, got off to a slow enough start. The Carlow side had a huge pack and kept the game tight at every opportunity, at times using second row Alex Mihajlovic as first centre to drive forward. U20’s outhalf Dave Clarke had his first start for the home side and had two opportunities at goal but with the swirling winds was unable to convert same. 25 minutes passed before Corinthians got their 1st score on the board. This came about after Carlow’s Richard Whyte’s clearance kick was blocked down by Cian Begley who followed up to touch down in the corner. The final score of the half was scored again by Corinthians after the visitors front row collapsed their scrum, substitute winger Kenny Diffenthal converted same leaving the half time score Corinthians 8 Carlow 0. Carlow with the wind assisting, started the second half brightly and after 14 minutes of play got on the scoreboard with a penalty by centre Greg Jacob. This concluded the scoring for both sides. It was a forward battle for the remaining 25 minutes with both sides slogging it out in the wind and rain. The Corinthians pack has shown this season that they can really slog it out and it would be impossible to single out anyone as they all did their bit. Again, the strength of the U20’s home side structure came to the fore with subs James Robinson and Karl Egan filling in. Great credit must also go to the back room boys i.e. Bernie Kelly, Leon Jordaan and Ricky Evans. Still it’s all there to play for with their next match away to Waterpark on Saturday 28th of March.
