All-Ireland Win For Cork

November 8, 2018

In Dungarvan last Saturday Cork won the ‘appetizer’ – the Intermediate All Ireland Hurling title. This was Cork’s third title in four years, add in four Munster Championship titles and you can see the great feats of this side. Team coach is the humble and unassuming Johnny Keane from Liscarroll. Our own Liam Barry is in this third year as a selector and this year another Bride Rovers clubman, Mike Carey, came on board as team trainer. Well done to Liam and Mike – who became the first Bartlemy man since Pat Lee in 1914 to train an All Ireland winning team – Pat trained Laois to win the 1914 Senior All Ireland, ironically defeating his native Cork in the final. I can safely say that Mike Carey is one of the youngest ever trainers to be involved at inter county level. Last Saturday’s game looked to be gone from Cork as added time ebbed away but a goal from Rory O’Doherty (son of Pat and nephew of ….full back Martin) leveled the scores. In the twenty minutes of extra time Cork got on top and won in the end by three points. Will Twomey from Kilworth was outstanding at full back for the Rebels. There’s talk about abolishing this grade which I think would be crazy. There was a handy crowd in Fraher Field on Saturday but there was a great atmosphere at this historic old venue which has hosted Senior All Irelands back in the early 1900’s.
