All at Athlone Town FC are delighted to share the news that Athlone has been named European Town of Sport for 2013 at a function in the Wineport Lodge, Athlone tonight. The announcement comes at the end of a two day visit by a European delegation during which the merits of Athlone as a vibrant sporting town were presented. Athlone Town CEO John O’Sullivan hosted the delegation at Athlone Town Stadium this afternoon, providing a brief history of the club, the stadium and the importance of football to the region; as well as detailing the local relationships the club are building.
Speaking after the announcement tonight, Chairman John Croughan expressed his delight at the announcement. “This is a wonderful achievement for all involved over recent months in putting the proposal and delegation visit together and Athlone Town FC are delighted to have been involved in the process since the initial meetings” he stated, “There will be an increased awareness and focus on sport in the region in 2013 as a result of the announcement and all at the club look forward to continuing our work with our sporting partners in the region as we look forward to an excitement period for Athlone, and Athlone Town FC.”
