Athlone Town FC Notes

Athlone Town 0 Dundalk 3

Athlone Town disappointing run continued this week when they played host to John Gills Dundalk FC. Due to injuries and suspensions along with Jim Sheridan away on honeymoon the Athlone line up was missing four other first team choices with Davy Byrne (suspended), Des Hope (Hamstring), Niall Scullion (knee) and Ciaran Kelly (shoulder) unavailable for selection.

In what was a game of very few clear goalscoring chances it was the visitors who took what came their way and two goals from David Cassidy and one from Jamie Duffy secured the points for Dundalk.

Athlone Town fielded 8 players aged 21 or under in their team and these players are gaining vital first team experience while the injury crisis continues and they are learning from every outing. Official attendance was 631.

Next Match

Athlone Town have their shortest away trip of the season this Saturday when they travel to Flancare Park to take on local rivals Longford Town. A number of former Town players are now on the books of former Town manager Aaron O’Callaghan with Damien Rushe, Ronan Frawley, Luke Hardy and Ryan Casey becoming regular starters for our rivals. Athlone Town have injury and suspension worries with Davy Byrne (suspension), Ciaran Kelly (shoulder), Claudio Nardone (ankle) definite non starters with Niall Scullion (knee) and Des Hope (hamstring) considered very doubtful. It is hoped that Jim Sheridan may be available this weekend when he returns from his honeymoon. A big travelling support is expected from Athlone as we attempt to get the local bragging rights for the season. Kick off in Flancare Park is 7.30pm

Athlone Town FC AGM

The 2008 Athlone Town FC AGM took place on Monday 21st April in the “Town Bar” Lissywollen. The following people were elected to the executive committee by members for the coming year. John Comber, Matthew Lough, Tony Knight, Tony Connaughton, Liam Gaffey, Chris Enright, Tom Fitzgerald. Nicky Moran.

Due to time constraints on the committee as a whole and the ongoing preperation in relation to the match against Dundalk last weekend the election of officers did not take place on Friday 25th April 2008 at our regular weekly meeting and has now been defered until the next committee meeting on Friday 2nd May where positions will be finalised.
We will also be in a position to announce the Schoolboy Affiliated Club Rep and the Independent Supporters Trust Rep who will take places on the executive committee in the coming weeks.

St John Bosco 0 Athlone Town 5

Athlone travelled to Dublin at the weekend to take on St John Bosco and in a totally complete performance put five goals past their rivals. Athlone now lie second in the DDSL Major Div 1 just one point behind Rangers CYM with 9 games of the season remaining.

Special Guests

St Josephs FC Under 11s, their parents and their coaches were special guest at the game between Athlone Town and Dundalk in honour of their achievement in reaching the semi finals of the Under 11 SFAI Cup where their adventure ended with defeat to one of the favourites in Cherry Orchard.. At half time they received a brilliant reception when they were introduced one by one to the crowd. We hope that all involved enjoyed their night in Lissywollen and we look forward to seeing all involved with St Josephs back in Lissywollen for the rest of the season.
