Bike for Ballina: Club fundraiser this June Bank holiday weekend in partnership with Waterman’s Lodge Day Care & Respite Centre. We will hold a bike marathon over the two days Saturday and Sunday, bikes will be placed at different venues in the village where members of the club will cycle in different sessions. The bike challenge will start at the GAA complex where the Juvenile Fun day will also be taking place. A secret prize for the winner will be presented at the end of the weekend, sponsorship cards have been given to all the teams from Under 14s up to the adult club. The club would appreciate everyone’s support in this venture. Sponsorship cards may be got from Sarah, Eileen, Brid and Carmel. Please contact Sarah with time you are available to bike. Ballina GAA Sports Quiz: Five events have now been completed, and with some surprise results so far it’s tight at the top of the table. Junior B: The junior hurlers defeated Ballinahinch in the hurling league in Shalee last Thursday night. Ballina 3-13 Ballinahinch 1-13. They take on Toomevara at 12 noon next Sunday in Toomevara.
U10 Hurlers: The u10 hurlers had a wonderful victory in the U10 Tommy Burtchaaell Memorial tournament last Sunday. It is always a special day in CLG Na Piarsaigh in Caherdavin and Ballina have been lucky enough to be part of it for the last two years. The day began as usual with a parsde for all 180 players behind the Limerick CBS pipe band, followed by the National Anthem. Then it was off to hurling where Ballina faced Ferrybank, Murroe/Boher, Sixmilebridge and Cappamore amongst others. After a shaky start versus the Suirsiders, the lads settled really well and a powerful performances from Kian Donnelly and Braoin Cleary, the assured presence of Jack Collins and the poacher’s instinct of Max Ryan carried the team into the final against Cappamore. Any final is a battle but a titanic one this was. The game ebbed and flowed with Ballina trailing by 4 goals at one point. Credit to the blue and white lads they didn’t give up and came out just on the right side of the result, making them champions again. Well done to all !
U8 Hurlers: The U8s had a marvelous days hurling in the summer sunshine last Saturday at the monthly Bord na nOg blizt. More used to Dr. Morris Park in recent times, this time the venue was nearby Durlas Og GAA grounds. The grass was cut low, the sun was out and the boys responded with a sparkling display of hurling full of grit and hard work. It was clear that everyone of them had improved since last week’s match against Killaloe. Everyone took part and there was literally hundrd of touches of the ball in each game. Afterwards, the sweat-drenched heads were evidence if needed that the requisite amount of effort had been put in to earn a stop at the shop for ice cream in recoginition of a job well done. The next of the monthly bliztes is scheduled for Saturday June 22nd.
Camogie U12: The U12 squad were playing in the semi-final of the county league last Wednesday and were unlucky to come out on the losing side to what was a very strong Nenagh team. The girls have to be congratulated for fighting from the minute the sliotar was thrown in. The mid-field pairing of Eimear O Brien and Katie Dunne were the essence of what hard work is all about. The forwards of Aisling O Meara Isabell Farnan, Hannah Finnerty and Roisin Coakely worked extremely hard to get the elusive goal with the sliotar passing by the goals on many occasions. The backs consisted of Hazel McMahon. Aoibheann Ward,Aoife Graham and Lucy McEvoy. Our fabulous goalkeeper on the day was Leah O Brien, she showes her true grit and determination when, at the begining of the second half she was put under severe pressure due to the strong wind. With out her on the day we would of lost by a bigger margin then we did. Jessicia Mc Carthy Gilligan made a great contribution in the forward line when she took to the field. Remainder of the panel consisted of Maeve Gilmartin, E Clarke, Hannah Keating, Siobhain Prentice, Leah O Donovan, Sarah Mckeogh and Sarah Lane.
