Juniors defeated by Carrignavar.
Our Junior A Grade Hurling team met the 2008 Champions Carrignavar in the first round of the East Cork Oil JAHC at the Felix Sarsfield Memorial Park in Watergrasshill on Saturday night last. Carrig were fastest out of the blocks and hit over some great points from play and from frees. It took our lads a long time to get into the pace of the game and we were five points down after ten minutes. Gradually we moved up the gears but the scores we got were hard won. When we fell ten points to three behind things looked ominous. In fairness though we dominated the last ten minutes of the first half. A free from Terry Broderick was finished to the net by Alan O Keeffe and this score was a mighty boost approaching the short whistle. At the break we were 0 12 to 1 3 behind. If Carrignavar dominated the opening period we took over big time in the second half. The defence were superb and our forward division got a more plentiful supply of the ball. Showing that traditional Rovers flair and spirit the team as a unit tore into the game. An early attack was put out for a 65 which Terry pointed. Showing his football skills Kieran Collins booted the sliotar to the net and now it was Carrignavar who were on the defensive. We missed a few scoring chances but still came to within a point of Carrig in the 51st minute. After missing a chance to get on level terms we suffered a hammer blow when Carrignavar broke away for a goal which restored their four point lead. At the end just three points separated the sides; Carrignavar 1 13 Bride Rovers 2 7. After the heavy defeat in our last League game this was a heartening display from the team, showing great character and plenty top class hurling.

Having used so many players at Senior level in the first two games of the Co Senior Championship this was a very good display. We are not out of the East Cork JAHC as there is a Losers Group, Round 2. The draw for this section was made on Saturday night. We certainly got the tough end of the stick! We have been paired with Castlemartyr, winners of the East Cork title in 2009 and 2010. They are one of the top teams in the County and will prove a major obstacle. But, as the man said, the bigger they come the harder they fall. We met them recently in the Avondhu/Imokilly JHL and they defeated us by 3 22 to 4 10. The expectation is that the Round Two games will be played before June the 8th and with Cork and Offaly on June the 7th our game may be earlier. Training continues this week. Fielding second and third hurling teams is never easy but well done to all the lads who played last Saturday night and to Dan Quill and his backroom team.
Senior Club Championship.
Our provisional Championship fixture v Blackrock next Sunday is gone. If Cork had defeated Tipp on Sunday last we’d have been facing Blackrock in Pairc Ui Chaoimh at 3.30 on next Sunday July the 1st. With Cork now fixed to play Offaly on Saturday week July 7th our game will have to be rescheduled. If Cork defeat the Faithful County on the 7th they will be in action once more on the 14th of July so our game has no definite date at the moment. Training is continuing and it is hoped to play one or two games in The Co Senior Hurling League.
It’s a great time of the year for hurling -well it should be , hard ground, warm weather, long balmy evenings and dust flying in the square! Summer time and the living is easy -yeah right! It is hard to imagine that we’re gone beyond midsummer and still the summer hasn’t come. Despite all that it’s marvellous to see so many training for all grades of hurling at present with two fields busy.
Minor Hurling.
The Minors have been busy during June with games in the Non Exam Players League. We had no win but games are great. Our first round Championship tie against Erins Own has been chopped and changed. At present we expect it to go ahead either on July 7th or 9th. With the Cork game now on the 7th it is unlikely that any games will be scheduled for that evening.
Cork v Tipperary.
Cork showed great character and skill on Sunday last in the Munster semi final against Tipperary in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Since 1972 I haven’t missed many Cork v Tipp games in Munster and last Sundays game was as enjoyable as any. Some fans felt it lacked ‘cutting’ but both teams gave their all. I felt near the end we’d be heading for a replay in Semple Stadium on Saturday next but no, Tipperary held on to win by a single point despite having a man sent off. Credit to the Cork hurling team for a gutsy display. All Cork followers can look forward to great days with this team in the future. The Munster final between Waterford and Tipperary will take place in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday July 22nd.
Bride Rovers Weekly Club Lotto.
The Bride Rovers Club is putting a big effort in over the next few weeks to boost the Lotto Ticket Sales. The Lotto is the main source of Club Funding. In recent years as well as the ordinary running expenses of the Club we have invested heavily in Development Projects. These are all very costly. As a Club we have great support in the Parish and far outside the Parish as well. We are appealing to all our supporters and friends to support the Weekly Lotto. If you are already buying a Ticket regularly a big ‘thank you’. If not please consider doing so from now on. Tickets are just €2 each but every €2 is important.

On Sunday July 8th Pairc na Bride will host the PIHC meeting of Castlelyons and Watergrasshill at 7pm. This should attract a fine crowd. The Club is producing a Match Programme for the game.
