Bride Rovers G.A.A. Club notes and news round-up for the week.

November 8, 2018

Same story for Senior Hurlers.

Our Senior Hurling team came up short in Cork on Saturday night in Round Two of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship. For the third time we suffered defeat at the hands of Na Piarsaigh in the 'backdoor' game. In our first ever Senior Game in 2004 the Northside team defeated us in Fermoy. Last year in the first round they repeated the dose and the same fate met us on Saturday night in Pairc Uí Rinn.

Saturday night's game was almost a carbon copy of the 2011 game. An early Na Piarsaigh goal by John Gardiner last year was the decisive score; on Saturday night it was Padraig Gould who raised the green flag. That goal stayed between us for most of the game, we narrowed the margin to just two points late on but Na Piarsaigh had the cushion of a three point winning margin in the end. Just as in our opening game against Erins Own we were well capable of winning the contest. We created plenty chances but having shot just four wides in our opening game our wides tally on Saturday was ten. It was a very disappointing result but

In fairness the team can be very proud of their heroic efforts on the night. When we were behind by 1 4 to 0 1 in the first half and by 1 9 to 0 6 in the second half we fought back gamely and got right into the game.

We started brightly with a Michael Collins point. Our defence seemed to be coping well but Gould's goal changed all that. The city side added four points before we came thundering back into the game. A David Burke point in between two Barry Johnson pointed frees left us 1 4 to 0 4 behind after twenty-two minutes. We had a great goal chance after Ml. Collins cut through but the ball was cleared. Barry and John Gardiner swapped points from frees to leave us 1 5 to 0 5 in arrears at the break. David Burke had our supporters in good voice on the restart with a great score. After this for some inexplicable reason it was the Piarsaighs who drove on with 4 unanswered points to go into a 1 9 to 0 6 lead. After this we improved all over the pitch the backs really tightened up and in general our hurling moved up a gear. WE had plenty possession but between the sixth and sixteenth minutes we had four wides in a row. A brace of points from Colm O Keeffe followed by a Daniel Dooley point brought us to within a goal of our opponents. Michael Collins brought the margin down to two. With Barry Murphy leading by example and Brian Murphy, Barry Johnson and Colm flying we attacked again and again but our finishing left us down.

As the game entered the last few minutes we were down three points again. Twice we had great goal chances but nothing came of them. We tried so hard to get an equalising score but time ran out after a great team effort. Well done to the eighteen players who played their part on the night. Twice now we have played with great heart and passion but have come away empty handed. All is not lost thankfully as we still have a chance to make an impression in this Championship.

D. Fitzgerald, A.Collins, B. Walsh, S. Kearney, B. Murphy, Barry Murphy, L. Forde, J.Pratt, B. Johnson ( 0 3 frees), D. Burke 0 2, J. Mannix , P. Murphy, M. Collins 0 2, S. Ryan J. O Driscoll .

We will now have to wait a few weeks for our next game. Cork play Tipperary in the Munster semi final on June 24th. Glen Rovers play Bishopstown on the following Wednesday night, June 27th and the losers of that game join ourselves, Cloyne and Blackrock in Round Three. On Monday night next June 18th the Draw for this round and Fixtures will be made at Pairc Ui Chaoimh at 7.30pm.

Cavanaghs of Fermoy Inter Divisional Junior Hurling League Div. 1 v Castlemartyr.

We travelled to Castlemartyr on Sunday evening last to play this fixture and we have to thank the 17 players who travelled and who showed their willingness to support the Club. We have a few players who are carrying injuries but it was disappointing that several players did not turn out for the game especially with the championship just two weeks away.

Playing a team that has won two East Cork Junior A grade Championships in recent years we were obviously up against it at the outset and in the first 15 minutes conceded 9 points, our only reply was a point scored by Alan. With 25 minutes gone it was 0-14 to 0-1. Then an excellent five-minute spell saw us scoring 1-4, the goal by Kieran Collins, and at half time we were behind 6 points on a score of 0-14 to 1-5.

We started the second half brightly and a free from Terry finished up in the back of the net. We were back in the game big time. We followed by two further goals by Gavin and Damien and two points by Terry, which left us 5 points ahead. We were now playing strong hurling with the players hungry for the ball and our defence was on top in this period. Castlemartyr came back into the game and scored 1-3 to regain the lead but we had 2 further points from Gerard and Stephen following some very good combination play. In the final 10 minutes we conceded some points from frees followed with two lucky, late goals from Castlemartyr - on both occasions Frank saved brilliantly but the rebounds were driven to the net. The final score was a defeat by 3-22 to 4-10.

Team: Frank Hogan, Fergus Collins, Brendan O'Driscoll, Kieran Manley, Trevor Moloney, Pat Walsh, Jim O'Connor, Kieran Collins, Stephen Pratt, Gerard Healy, Richie Cahill, Terry Broderick, Damien Buckley, Alan O'Keeffe, Gavin Quill. Subs: Kieran Wolfe and Jamie Buckley.

Scorers: Terry Broderick 1-6, Kieran Collins 1-1, Damien Buckley 1-0, Gavin Quill 1-0, Gerard Healy 0-1, Alan O'Keeffe 0-1 and Stephen Pratt 0-1.

Junior 3 Hurling League V St. Catherines at Pairc Na Bhride on Monday 4th June 2012.

We had a bright opening to this game and had 1-1 on the board within minutes, the goal by Gavin Quill and an excellent point by Daniel Lane, St Cats settled down and followed this with a goal and 3 points. Just before half time a deflection deceived Frank and we were behind by 2-5 to 1-3 at half time.

St Cats started where they had left off after the break and scored 2-2 without reply (both goals were well saved by Frank but the rebounds were driven home). We were competitive from there on and held our own for the remainder of the game thanks to a tremendous display of goalkeeping by Frank, no doubt but for him the goal tally for St Cats could have been in double figures. The final score was a loss by 4-10 to 1-7.

Team: Frank Hogan, Willie O'Leary, Brian Collins, Richard Foley, Niall Hogan, Sean O'Brien, Fergus Collins, Damien Buckley, Stephen Pratt, Gerard Healy, Alan O'Keeffe, Daniel Lane, Gavin Quill, James Hogan, Kieran Wolfe Subs: James O'Sullivan, Jamie Buckley and Maurice Dooley.

Scorers: Gavin Quill 1-0, Daniel Lane 0-4, Alan O'Keeffe 0-2 and Sean O'Brien 0-1.

Next Match: Cavanaghs of Fermoy Avondhu/Imokilly Junior Hurling League V Dungourney away on Wednesday 13th June at 7.30, this is our last game in the league.
