Junior ‘B’ Hurlers Pipped

At Lisgoold on last Wednesday night, our Junior ‘B’ hurling team met Carrignavar in the ‘back door’ game of the championship. Both teams were defeated in Round One, Youghal beat us while last year’s beaten finalists, Carrignavar were defeated by Aghada. The game in Lisgoold was a low scoring affair. A Philip Butler goal helped us into a 1-2 to 0-3 lead in the first half. The second half saw very little between the sides. Carrignavar were in top form. In the end we were defeated by a single point, 0-9 to 1-5. While this was a disappointing result, full marks to all the players who togged out. The idea of having a competition in East Cork confined to third string teams only is something that must be looked at seriously.

Team & Scorers: Alan Broderick, Barry Collins, Joe Delaney, Fergus Collins, Ryan O’Connor, Sean O’Brien, David Barry, John O’Dowd (0-1), Stephen Pratt, Nial Hogan, P O’Driscoll (0-1), Damien Buckley, Vinnie O’Keefe (0-2), James Hogan (0-1), Philip Butler (1-0) Subs: Brian Lahive, Mark O’Connell.

Junior ‘A’ Hurlers in Action

On this Thursday night August 5th our Junior ‘A’ hurlers are back in Championship action. Having defeated Cloyne in Round One of the championship a few weeks back, we got a bye in the next round. Our opponents on Thursday night are the surprise packet of the championship, Fr O’Neills. It was widely expected that our opponents in this week’s game would be St Itas. The Gortroe side seemed to be flying both in the league and the early round of the championship. They came a cropper when they met Fr O’Neills ‘second string’ two weeks ago. It was no fluke result and Fr O’Neills will provide a very stern test on Thursday night. The game is fixed for 7.30 in Lisgoold.

Senior Hurling League

Bride Rovers 0-14 Midleton 0-13

On Thursday night last Midleton were the visitors to Pairc Na Bríde for our 9th game in the Red FM sponsored Cork County Senior Hurling League.
Midleton started the brighter & had two points scored before Barry Johnson scored two pointed frees to level the game. Midleton extended their lead again with points from Conor Lehane & a free from Sean Hennessy before Kieran Collins had Rovers third point. Another point from Midleton opened the gap to 2 points before a fantastic brace of points from Barry Johnson had the scores level for a second time at 0-5 each. In the remaining minutes of the half Midleton were to go in front again scoring 4 points from frees, the Rovers only score was a pointed free from Barry Johnson. Half time: Bride Rovers 0-06 Midleton 0-09.
The third quarter saw both sides swap points, Sean Hennessy pointed two more frees for Midleton while points from Barry Johnson & Sean Ryan had reduced the deficit to a point by the 45th minute, 0-11 to 0-10. The contest was intense as both sides battled for possession, Sean Hennessy pointed again for Midleton but the Rovers response was immediate & were soon back on level terms following a Barry Johnson point, his ninth of the game, and an equaliser from Michael Collins. With time nearly up, veteran star Pat Walsh pointed from midfield to put the Rovers a point up but Midleton equalised. In the last attack of the game,  a patient move involving several Rovers players ended with Jerome O’Driscoll  shot at goal dropping short but a great flick on by Brennie O’Driscoll at Full Forward helped the ball over the bar & secure a one point win for the Rovers.

Team & Scorers:
T.Broderick, A.Collins, B.Walsh, T.Moloney, J.Pratt, B.Murphy, C.Collins, P.Murphy, P.Walsh (0-1), S.Boyce, B.Johnson (0-9), J.O’Driscoll, S.Ryan (0-1), K.Collins (0-1), M.Collins (0-1). Subs Used: P. Cotter, B.O’Driscoll (0-1).

Congratulations to Senior Players Denis Fitzgerald on his marriage to Chantal Mahon & to David Burke on his marriage to Elaine O’Regan last weekend.

Senior Hurling Championship

The expectation is that our Senior Hurling Championship against Blarney will now be played on the weekend of August 14/15th. The outcome of the various investigations, appeals and hearings in regards to the Glen Rovers game are now well and truly in the past. We all know the outcome and the punishment meted out to the club. It’s time now to close ranks, accept the sanctions and move on.

Cork v Kilkenny

On next Sunday Cork face Kilkenny in the All Ireland Senior Hurling semi final in Croke Park. This is the game of the year as Cork attempt to thwart Kilkenny in their bid to achieve a never before achieved five-in-a-row. Cork go into this game as rank outsiders with the Noresiders seen as being unbeatable. The history of Cork and Kilkenny clashes over the annals of the GAA however dictates that form accounts for nothing between the Cats and the Rebels. Cork have had championship games against Tip, Limerick, Waterford (twice) and Antrim. Their displays have been a bit patchy but one can be certain that Kilkenny will bring out the very best in Cork. best to Brian and all his Cork colleagues on Sunday. Safe travelling to all those going to Dublin for the weekend.
