SENIOR C’SHIP ON AUGUST 18th.
Our Senior Hurling Championship game against Blackrock has been fixed for Saturday fortnight August 18th. The game has been postponed three times on account of the success of the Cork Senior Hurling team. Cork won again last Sunday, deferating Waterford in the All Ireland Quarter Final. That win sees the Rebels facing Galway in the Semi Final on Sunday week August 11th. Regardless of the result of this game our fixture will go ahead the following Saturday. Hopefully the Cork hurlers will be in the All Ireland final, scheduled for Sunday September 9th. Our game on August 18th will be part of a double bill with Cloyne and Glen Rovers, both games are down for Pairc Ui Chaoimh. We have a home fixture in the Red FM Coerk Senior Hurling League on this Friday evening when we face Cloyne at 76. 30 in Pairc na Bride.
Minor Footballers Win.
On Saturday February the 4th we played our first game in the 2012 Coiste East Minor Football League. On that raw Saturday afternoon six months ago we travelled to Cloyne to take on the home side. After a good competitive game the Clone side prevailed on a scoreline of 2 7 to 1 4. On Monday night last the sides met again in Pairc na Bride, Rathcormac -on this occasion it was the quarter final of the Championship. We were defeated by Erins Own in the hurling C.ship just three weeks ago so our football preparation wasn’t huge but we faced Cloyne in a fairly confident mood. Dean Linehan kicked over a good point from play early on as our midfield pairing of Cian O Connor and David Quinn won a lot of possession. Soon the visitors came strongly into the game and scored a goal and a point to lead by 1 1 to 0 1 after ten minutes. For the next quarter of an hour Cloyne dominated but Eoin, Jacob, Podge, Sean, Shane and Tadhg gave great cover to Frank and overall our defence stood up to some tremendous pressure and prevented Cloyne from adding to their tally. Two pointed frees from William Finnegan saw us just a point behind. A great move involving Stephen O Leary, William and Jamie Buckley ended smartly with Jamie raising a green flag, we were ahead by 1 3 to 1 1. That’s the way the score stood at the break. We were in a great position as Cloyne had certainly more possession in the opening period but our backs were in top form. The lads started the second half as they had finished the first kicking three points in a row. Firstly William Finnegan had two points from play at either side of a similar score from Stephen O Leary. These scores stretched our lead to 1 6 to 1 1. Cloyne fought back with two points, one from a free to make it 1 6 to 1 3. A great goal from Cian O Connor gave us a two goal lead. Entering the last few minutes Cloyne added a point from play. Dean Linehan had a similar score for us to leave us winners by 2 7 to 1 4. It was great display from all the team and Liam and Jack who came on as subs. This win qualifies us for the semi final against a very strong Ballinora side. The Mid Cork team defeated us by a big margin in the League in March. St. Catherins face Slieverue in the other semi final.

Tony Walsh RIP.
It was a sad ‘homecoming’ on Tuesday night last as the Bride Rovers Club waited for the hearse bearing Tony Walsh as it came up Hollyhill to Bartlemy Village. Just yards away from where the Bandroom stood -the spot where Bride Rovers was founded in 1928, a large number of players, former players, club officers and members, many in the Rovers colours gathered. We walked in a sad, silent guard of honour with Tony on his journey to Bartlemy Church. It was a fitting tribute to Tony and a small recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Club. It was remarkable to see so many of his former team-mates mingle with hurlers from Watergrasshill, St. Catherines, Dungourney, Castlelyons, Lisgoold, Killeagh, Sars, Castlemartyr and Carrigtwohill. Truly the GAA ‘family’ is a great uniting bond amongst those who gave their all for the honour of the ‘little village’. John Fitzgerald, formerly of Fort Richard, Bartlemy travelled from England for the funeral.

Well done to our Senior Ladies Football team who had a great win over an Erins Own/ Carrigtwohill selection last Monday night in the Co S C ship. The game was played in the Redmonds Grounds in Cork city and the Rovers won by 2 13 to 3 5.

Donal O Dwyer from Annacarty, Tipperary won a Munster Minor Hurling Medal with Tipperary recently. Donal is son of PP and Nora (nee Arnold, Bartlemy) O Dwyer. Well done also to James Roche who won a Leinster Minor Hurling Medal with Dublin. James’ father is Joseph Roche from Ballinure, Bartlemy.
