SECOND LEAGUE WIN FOR JUNIORS.

Our Junior Hurlers travelled to Riverstown to on last Friday evening to take on Sarsfields in the second game in the East Cork Junior Hurling League (Div 2)

From the throw-in Sars attached but has 2 wides. In our first attack Colm O Keeffe drilled home a great goal after a move involving 5 players. We kept the pressure on and with some wonderful combination play ran Sars into the ground and finished up leading by  3-9 to 0-5 at half-time having played with the wind.

We started brightly in the 2nd half and had a further 1-2 on the board before Sars scored again. Sars scored a further 5 points  but we added on  1 5 for a good victory. It was nice to use some of the younger players during the 2nd half and they fitted in well.

The final score was Bride Rovers  5-16 to 0-10 for Sarsfields.

Scorers:   Colm O’Keeffe 2-4, Eoin Murphy 2-2, Alan O’Keeffe 1-1, Sean O’Brien 0-2, Terry Broderick 0-2, Pat Walsh 0-2, Jason Mannix 0-3.

Junior Hurling League  Division 3.

On Sunday morning our Div 3 side travelled to Pairc Ui Cheinneide in Killeagh to play the home team. This was our first game in this League for 2011.

We played from the start with a strong wind but went 2 points behind. We settled down and had 1-2 without reply but missed some good opportunities to lead by more. We were unlucky not to extend our lead as we hit the post on three occasions in the first half. We lead at half-time by 1-8 to 0-5 but this lead was not really enough bearing in mind the strength of the elements.

During the break the wind turned into a storm and Killeagh hit the ground running and scored 2-4 in the first 7 minutes of the 2nd half. With the conditions we were under constant pressure and Killeagh scored points at will. We got a few opportunities to score goals and ha a penalty saved as well but could only add a single point to our half-time tally.  We lost by 2-16 to 1-9 and we need to settle down to some serious  training immediately with a view to having a good run with this 3rd team as these players are committed to the game and the club.

Team:  Frank Hogan, Barry Collins, Sean O’Brien, William O’Leary, Niall Hogan, Patrick O’Driscoll, Brian Lahive, Ryan O’Connor, Richard Cahill, Liam O’Leary, Alan O’Keeffe, Damien Buckley, George Johnson, Paul Dee, Daniel Lane.

Subs Used:   Colm O’Keeffe, Adrian Buckley, Kieran Wolfe, Enda Collins and James Bermingham.

Congratulations to Grace Kearney and Eleanor Ahern on winning National League medals with the Cork Ladies Football team last Saturday. Cork defeated Laois in Parnell Park and it is fantastic to see All Ireland medals coming to the parish and the Club. The Cork trainer is Eamonn Ryan from Watergrasshill. In 1957 Eamonn played on the Sarsfields u 16 hurling team which was defeated in the East Cork Final by Bride Rovers on a scoreline of 4  1 to 2 0. Eamonn’s brother Michael (later Fr. Michael) played in goals for Bride Rovers !
