Senior Football

Sunday, April 7. Rosscarbery.

Rosscarbery 2-10              Bride Rovers 1-6

Our senior team were defeated in round 2 of the league by Rosscarbery on a scoreline of 2.10 to 1.6 on Sunday last.  Conditions were cold and wet in Rosscarbery where the home side got off to a better start and led by 2.7 to 3 points at half time.  The rovers girls never gave up and were it not for some goal line saves and narrow wides the score line might have favoured the rovers girls in the end.  Beara are next week’s opposition at a midway venue, to be confirmed during the week.  This is the second last game of the league and one the rovers girls will be targeting to register their first league points.   We wish Katie Kelleher a speedy recovery from her unfortunate hand injury in Sunday’s game.

Panel and scorers: Caitriona Vaughan, Emma O’Keeffe, Arlene O’Callaghan, Bridget Forde, Mary Hazelwood, Shelly McAteer, Claire Murphy, Eleanor Ahern (1-0), Niamh Barry (Captain), Colette Hogan, Jennifer Barry(0-2), Katie Kelleher, Trish O’ Sullivan, Jennifer Cahill (0-2), Katie Connor, Sarah Barry (0-2), Maria Barry, Cynthia Buckley, Erin O’ Keeffe, Annmarie Kearney.

Junior Football

Thursday, April 4

Bride Rovers 0-10             Douglas 2-3

Great performance from the junior team in their first league game of the year, with a great turnout, with 21 players togging out. The scoreline flattered Douglas with them grabbing 2 second half consolation goals towards the end of the game. We started very brightly, scoring some lovely points & led at the interval 0-6 pts to 0-2.

We continued in the same vein in the 2nd half, with some of the subs getting in on the scoring. In fact we had 6 different scorers by the end of the match. Douglas scored 2 late goals to take the gloss slightly off what was a great team performance, but we held out for a well deserved victory on a scoreline of 0-10 to 2-3.

Team: Irene Hogan, Maria Barry, Carol Noonan, Erin O’Keeffe, Claire Murphy, Finola Hogan, Katie Kelleher, Trish O’Sullivan, Katie Connor, Laura O’Keeffe, Imelda Dorgan, Sarah Barry, Sinead O’Driscoll.

Subs: Meeks Carr, Cynthia Buckley, Aoife Deasy, Karen Sheehan, Margaret Kearney, Áine Cashman, Lauren Friel & Elaine Culloty.

U16 Football

Saturday, April 6. East Cork League.

Midleton 3-5      Bride Rovers 0-15

Anyone who travelled to Ballinacurra last Saturday afternoon were certainly served up with a contest to make the journey worthwhile. Bride Rovers dominated the scoreline, though not necessarily general play, in the first half leading by 11 points to 2 at half-time. Ominously though, we did not raise a green flag or two, several shots whistling over the crossbar rather than under! Our forwards excelled in that opening half, as the mid-field/centreback diamond of Grace Culloty, Karen Sheehan and Laura Quirke drove forward at every opportunity to create the chances. We continued to make chances in the second half but found scoring much harder as the wind perhaps had a greater impact than we would have thought. Midleton launched a sustained fightback and got goals, including one from a penalty, which eventually brought them level on the stroke of fulltime. Madison made some great saves also during this period and the eventual winning of the game was definitely down to her and all the 6 backs (Niamh, Laura, Sarah, Margaret, Aoife and Grainne) who dealt with the pressure admirably. Finally, there are many leaders on the U16 panel but none more so than Laura Quirke who took the game by the scruff of the neck in the closing seconds. Not satisfied with a draw, she powered forward from centre-back and ended up at the end of a move to kick what transpired to be the winning point. Well done to all concerned as this win now puts us in a good position in the group.

Panel : Madison Parle, Sarah O Flynn, Niamh Murphy, Margaret Kearney, Aoife O Riordan, Laura Quirke (0-1), Grainne Noonan, Grace Culloty (0-1), Karen Sheehan (0-1), Jessica Howard, Emma Roche (0-5), Meg Kelliher (0-2), Elaine Culloty (0-2), Aoife Deasy (0-3), Laura Pratt, Michelle Lane, Shauna O’Connell, Maria O’Sullivan, Emma Hazelwood, Emma Barry, Aisling Finnegan.

U14 Football

Thursday, April 4. East Cork League

Bride Rovers 1-3               Fermoy 8-7.

Our U14 fixture against Fermoy did not go to plan when we were defeated by Fermoy at our main pitch last Thursday evening. We actually started very brightly and took the game to Fermoy in the early stages but we were then rocked by the forced departure, at a very early stage, of 2 of our senior and more experienced players from the field through illness and injury. We needed all our resources against strong opposition and unfortunately that was not the case on this occasion. Full credit to the many U12 players who play their part for the Bride Rovers club by lining out at U14 level and they gave everything on the pitch in difficult circumstances. Our numbers at this particular group have historically always been low, only 4 x 14yos to call on at best, and ,at this stage, we probably have a case to ask for their grading to be looked at for the future.

Panel : Sarah Murphy, Rachel O Flynn, Emily Larkin, Fiona Barry, Emma Barry, Michelle Lane, Emma Hazelwood, Siobhan O Sullivan, Grace Culloty (1-1), Aislinn O’Connor, Arianne O Flynn (0-1), Lucy Hicks, Aisling Finnegan, Kate Quirke (0-1), Sarah Geaney, Anna Murray, Evelyn O’Keeffe, Caoimhe Hazelwood.

BRIDE ROVERS LADIES U12 FOOTBALL MATCH V ROCKBAN

SATURDAY MARCH 30TH

PAIRC NA BRIDE

BRIDE ROVERS                   7 – 10

ROCKBAN                             1 – 2

OUR U12 LADIES FOOTBALL TEAM BEGAN THEIR CAMPAIGN WITH A COMFORTABLE WIN OVER ROCKBAN ON EASTER SATURDAY AT HOME IN RATHCORMAC. WE WERE QUICK OUT OF THE BLOCKS AND EVERYONE WAS PLAYING VERY WELL FOR OUR FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON. ELLA HAD A GREAT GAME IN GOAL AND WITHOUT HER ROCKBAN WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH CLOSER AT THE FINAL WHISTLE. OUR FULLBACK LINE OF CAOIMHE HAZELWOOD, RACHAEL O FLYNN AND SOPHIE DORGAN WERE OUTSTANDING AND STOPPED ALL OF ROCKBANS EARLY ATTACKS. IN THE HALF BACK LINE, CAOIMHE O SULLIVAN, FIONA BARRY AND CHLOE MURPHY WERE FIRST TO EVERY BALL. IN MIDFIELD, SARAH MURPHY AND AOIFE COWMAN WERE COVERING A LOT OF GROUND AND PLAYING GREAT BALL IN TO THE FORWARDS. OUR HALF FORWARD LINE OF REBECCA WALSH, KATIE QUIRKE AND SHAUNA HAYES WERE CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR THE ROCKBAN BACKS. IN THE FULL FORWARD LINE REBECCA HILL, LUCY HICKS AND CIARA O FLYNN WON GREAT BALL AND PLAYED SOME GREAT PASSES TO PLAYERS OUT THE FIELD AND WE GOT SOME FINE SCORES. OUR SUBS OF KATE O RIORDAN, BRONAGH CLEARY AND SORCHA TOBIN CAME ON IN THE FIRST HALF AND PLAYED BRILLIANTLY. WE WILL HAVE SOME SELECTION HEADACHES FOR THE NEXT MATCH WHICH IS A GREAT POSITION TO BE IN. KATIE QUIRKE HAD A FABULOUS DAY, FINISHING WITH 5 – 7 OF OUR TOTAL. SARAH MURPHY SCORED 1 – 2 , LUCY HICKS GOT A FABULOUS POINT AND SORCHA TOBIN GOT A GOOD GOAL ON HER DEBUT WITH THIS TEAM. ALL OF OUR TEAM PLAYED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL ON THE DAY AND A FEATURE OF OUR PLAY WAS THE PASSING MOVEMENTS BETWEEN OUR PLAYERS. WELL DONE TO ALL OF THE GIRLS.

Bride Rovers vs Inch Rovers

OUR U12 GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM CONTINUED THEIR GOOD START TO THE SEASON WITH ANOTHER GOOD WIN OVER INCH ROVERS AT PAIRC NA BRIDE LAST SATURDAY. WE SHOWED SOME GREAT TEAMWORK FROM THE VERY START OF THE GAME WITH ALL OF OUR STARTING 15 DOMINATING THEIR MARKERS FROM THE THROW-IN. WE GOT SOME EARLY SCORES FROM THE BOOT OF SARAH MURPHY PLAYING IN MIDFIELD WHICH SETTLED US DOWN EARLY ON IN THE GAME. INCH ROVERS CAME AT US STRONGLY IN THE 10 MINUTES BEFOR HALF TIME BUT THEY FOUND ELLA QUINLAN IN UNBEATABLE FORM IN GOAL AND ALONG WITH THE FULLBACK LINE OF SOPHIE, RACHEL AND CAOIMHE HAZELWOOD, THEY MADE LIFE DIFFICULT FOR THE INCH FORWARDS. OUR HALF BACK LINE OF CAOIMHE O SULLIVAN, FIONA BARRY AND CHLOE PLAYED SOME GREAT BALL TO SARAH AND AOIFE IN MIDFIELD WHO KEPT IT MOVING INTO OUR FORWARDS. THE FORWARD LINE OF REBECCA WALSH, KATIE, SHAUNA, REBECCA HILL, LUCY AND CIARA WERE WORKING WELL AS A UNIT AND THEY KEPT THE INCH BACKS UNDER PRESSURE ALL THROUGH. OUR THREE SUBS KATE O RIORDAN, BRONAGH AND SORCHA PLAYED EXCEPTIONALLY WHEN INTRODUCED AND THIS SHOWS THE STRENGTH IN THIS U12 PANEL. KATIE AGAIN SHOWED THAT HER RADAR WAS WORKING WITH SOME FINE SCORES THROUGHOUT. ONE FEATURE OF THE GAME WAS THE PASSING BETWEEN OUR PLAYERS AND SHOWS THAT THEY ARE LISTENING IN TRAINING! WELL DONE AGAIN GIRLS.

Primary Games

Siobhan O’Sullivan continues the fine tradition of Bride Rovers players who have lined out for Cork in the primary games as she has been selected for the 2013 team. Siobhan, who plays for our U14 football and camogie teams, has made a big effort to improve her game, including completing the excellent Cork ladies football development programme during the winter along with Emma Barry and Aislinn O’Connor. This honour is therefore very much deserved.
