Senior Football

Sunday, April 21st, Ovens

Eire Og 2-16 Bride Rovers 2-7

The senior girls played Eire Og on April 21st in Ovens in the Division 1 league and were beaten by a young and vibrant side. Playing conditions were good for a game of football but the Rovers girls allowed Eire Og to gain an early lead. The football was flowing better for the mid-cork side and they were worthy of their impressive half time lead of 2.11 to 0-4. As is always the case with this bunch of Rovers girls they were not to go down without a fight. The second half saw an increase in tempo and a chance to play the football they are capable of. They outscored Eire Og by 2.3 to 0.5 and in doing so put a much more respectable scoreline in place at the final whistle. One wonders if there was another few minutes would the game have been even closer as a contest as the Rovers girls were applying relentless pressure and taking some fine scores. The final score was 2.16 to 2.7 in favour of the home side.

Beara 2-15 Bride Rovers 3-6

On Thursday 25th the Senior girls travelled to Lough Rovers on the Carrigrohane straight to play Beara in the final league fixture. This game ebbed and flowed with both sides leading for periods of the game. The rovers girls were numerically challenged on the night due to many players having prior commitments. This was to prove too much of an obstacle to overcome as they had to finish the game with just 14 players. The west cork side led 1.7 to 1.4 at half time but this lead was reversed 10 minutes into the second half and the Rovers girls lead by 4 points with 10 minutes to go. The bodies were tiring as a gigantic effort had been put in by all to turn the game around and Beara pounced on this and got some quick scores to put them into the lead again. The rovers girls played to the bitter end but couldn’t stop a victory for the west cork side on a scoreline of 2.15 to 3.6.

Panel and scorers: Caitriona Vaughan, Emma O’Keeffe, Arlene O’ Callaghan, Erin O’ Keeffe, Cynthia Buckley, Claire Murphy, Trish O’ Sullivan, Eleanor Ahern (1-1), Niamh Barry (Captain)(0-1), Colette Hogan(1-1), Jennifer Barry(1-3), Jennifer Cahill, Imelda Dorgan, Sarah Barry, Marieke Bardoul.

Bride Rovers 3-5 Boherbue 3-4.

We played Boherbue B on Sunday night on a windy night in Rathcormac. We played the first half with the aid of a strong wind, and used it to its full advantage, scoring 3-1 in the first half with Sarah Barry, Katie Connor & Sinead O’Driscoll grabbing the goals. We led at the break by 3-1 to 0-1.

Boherbue to their credit rallied in the second half & got themselves back in the game. However, we held on for a narrow one point win, with the girls working extremely hard & defending tirelessly.
