Minor Football

Wednesday, October 31st .
County Championship Semi-Final
St Michael’s 5-8 Bride Rovers 3-10

Our minor campaign for 2012 ended in semi-final defeat at the hands of St Michael’s at their pitch last Wednesday. This was a very hard match throughout and there was little between the sides for most of the proceedings. A Jen Barry goal just before half-time meant we trailed by only 2 points at the break and we felt the game was there for us in the second half. However, they scored 2 goals early in that half and that put us on the back foot. We were picking off the points though and when Grace Culloty arrived in the box from midfield to finish off to the net, we were back in business. Our hopes were dashed though when they then scored 2 of the quickest goals you could see and we faced a huge challenge to reel back an 8 point lead in the last 10 minutes. Our girls do not know how to give up though and we fought back bravely. A Jen Barry point that scraped the crossbar from a 20 metre free and a goal from Elaine Culloty brought the lead back to 4 points and there was still hope. The turning point came seconds later when we were awarded another 20 metre free. Jen Barry buried the ball in the net but the free was ordered to be retaken because of encroachment by the defenders. This hammer-blow was compounded when the retaken free was cleared. We were finishing very strongly and a goal at that point would have been crucial but it was not to be. Best of luck to St Michael’s in the final.

U21 Football

Monday, October 29th .
County Championship Semi-Final
Valley Rovers 4-8 Bride Rovers 1-12

They say that goals win games and this was certainly the case in our County U21 semi-final against a strong Valley Rovers side in Ballincollig on Bank Holiday Monday. Our girls were very competitive throughout and got some great scores but had to give best to Valley in the end. We have contested U21 finals for the past few years so it will be strange not to be involved this year but well done to the panel and mentors Irene, Betty and Sinead who put in a great effort. Best of luck to Valley Rovers in the final.

Scorers : Sinead Walsh 1-3, Elaine Dee 0-4 Jen Cahill 0-2, Elaine Culloty 0-2, Trish O’Sullivan 0-1.

Junior 13-a-side Final

Sunday, October 28th
County Final
St Coleman’s 4-10 Bride Rovers 0-3

It was always going to be an uphill challenge for our second team in a county final and so it proved in Lisgoold on Sunday, October 28th against St Colemans. We tried hard throughout but were unlucky not to make the best use of our chances in the first half when we were well in touch. 2 goals from St Colemans either side of half-time broke our challenge and tiredness set in as the game went on also. Well done to everyone who participated in the Junior team this year. We set out with a target to play 10 games and comfortably exceeded that as the county final was our 14th fixture of the year. The panel also brought back a trophy in June when we won the East Cork Junior C championship, so, all things considered, 2012 was a very successful one for the Bride Rovers junior panel.

Panel : Irene Hogan, Lisa Finnegan, Cynthia Buckley, Shannon Sheehan, Aine Cashman, Erin O’Keeffe, Trish O’Sullivan, Lauren Friel, Clodagh Butler, Laura O’Keeffe (Capt.), Karen Sheehan, Sinead O’Driscoll, Finola Hogan, Aoife O’Riordan, Elaine Culloty, Margaret Kearney, Yris Bolemhoff, Deirdre Moroney, Avelina Crowley, Meg Kelliher, Valerie Culloty, Carol Noonan, Katie Kelliher.
