Congratulations to Sean Patrick Carville on his wonderful performance at the National Under 14 Féile na nGael finals in Galway at the weekend. He came second in the Skills Competition. Sean Patrick is another young hurler from these parts to thrive at the National Finals. Last year it was Pearse Og McCrickard from our neighbours Liatriom who was successful in this competition. When you see Sean Patrick practising in the Meadow at every opportunity and the work he has put in then you will realise that this performance is no real surprise to all who has mentored him and encouraged him in his progress. Judging by the e-mails received in the Club his success is being well received throughout the County. Congratulations to Sean Patrick who is a real credit to his parents, Club and County. Well done once again.
* The under 12 girls entertained Aughlisnafin girls at home last week. After a slow start the girls soon got into their stride and ran comfortable winners over a gallant Finn side. Well done to all and thanks to Kevin and Orla for agreeing to field at short notice.
* On Saturday past a squad of 10 girls of the Under 12 Girls Team attended Carryduff Football Tournament. After playing 5 games in their section they went on to play a semi-final against Saul. At the finish there was nothing between the teams. Extra time was agreed on a first to score wins. The Town girls were on the attack from the throw in and took the decisive score to win the game and progress to the final against neighbours Bryansford. This game proved to be one of the best of the day, as play flowed from end to end before Bryansford managed to capitalise on a couple of mistakes to take the game. This was a long but worthwhile day for the girls playing 7 games and developing their skills. There were excellent performances from the 2 goalkeepers on the day Shannon and Aisling. The defence of Emma, Rebecca and Michaela played their hearts out. In midfield the strong running and determined Jade, Saorlaith and Jade fought like demons. Up front Aisling, Erin and Niamh always threatened to cut defences open. Thanks to Dessie for the transport, to Sarah and Laurence for taking the team. Next training session Wednesday 6th July 5.30pm.
* The Senior Hurlers produced another great performance last week but this time came out on the right side of the result beating Ballycran by 2-12 to 1-10 up in the Ards. This is a good performance considering not many team get a positive result from this side of the water up there. Great performances all round. Special word to Ray Cunningham who sustained a nasty ear injury. We hear he is on the mend!
* A further reminder that the Castlewellan GAC VHI Cul Camp will take place from 25th July to 29th July 2011. Forms containing all the information will be circulated round local primary schools. Parents are advised to book early. The nursery camp for children in P1 – P2 runs from 10.00 – 12.30. Please note that you cannot book this part of the Camp on the Internet. The camp for children in P3 – 13 year old runs from 10.00 – 2.30. Discounts are available if more than 1 child per family attends. * The Under 16 Camogie Team had a good win at home to Longstone last week with a powerful display from the team with great passing and vision all round. Great performances from Claire Cleland, Catriona Caldwell and Aoife Keown.
* On a wet and difficult evening last Friday the Senior Footballers continued their good run by beating Newry Shamrocks 1-16 to 0-03. The Town mastered the difficult conditions and worked hard to get this result. They lead 1-09 to 0-02 at the break. Although there was only one score in the first twenty minutes of the second half the Town’s high work rate and tenacious tackling prevented the opposition many scoring opportunities. They rattled off 7 points in the last 10 minutes with some fine scores. Next game away to Annaclone.
* At a recent meeting an emergency item was placed on the agenda – Francie McAlinden needed a partner for the Curragh Boat Race on The Lake. Much debate ensued. Rory “he would slow the boat down” Focus “he’s blind” The Doc “no sense of direction”. We were in despair when wise old Trixie mentioned “The Hen”. Will he come over from the “Dark Side (Bryansford!)”? we all wondered. The call was made and John Kelly reported for duty. The race was won by the lads in front of 300 spectators on a lovely summers evening at the lake. This was part of the G Day festival by TG4 who filmed it for coverage later in the Summer. Well done to Francie and John.
