Castlewellan Notes 29 July 2012

* It has not been a good week for our Senior Teams. The footballers suffered double agony this week when they were beaten at home on Monday of last week by Clonduff and then on Friday Night away to Mayobridge. The Town were in control against Clonduff when the visitors found the net half way through the first half game was. This was the confidence boost that they required having played second fiddle to The Town early on. This seemed to rock The Town back and they were always playing catch up. They sealed the win with a goal in the final ten minutes. On Friday Night the Town travelled to Mayobridge where we lost narrowly at the death in a came we could have won. We missed a chance at the end only for Mayobridge to score in the dying seconds of the game to win with the narrowest of margins.

* The senior hurlers came up against a strengthened Ballygalget Team at the Bann Road last Monday Night and were well beaten. That said they are playing better teams every week which will stand to them. Coming into this week’s championship it was good to get this game under their belts.

* Shot down one week and a rise like the Phoenix the following week. Down made light of the six day turnaround which always afflicts beaten provincial finalists. They managed to overcome the challenge of Tipperary by five points. Our own Kevin Duffin supplied the long delivery which led to the Down goal scored by Benny Coulter on the stroke of half time. He also added a point from a free. So it is a visit to Croke Park this Saturday evening at 5.00pm to take on Mayo in the All Ireland Quarter Final.  Hopefully it will not be our last visit this summer. Good luck once again to Kevin, Aidan Burns and Margaret King.

* The under 16 girls footballers had a good 7-07 to 0-02 win up in Burren at the weekend playing some neat football. It was good to see them playing the early ball which at any level always favours the forward. On this occasion the forward to benefit the most was Katie Savage who finished the game with three goals. Well done to Katie and all the girls who played really well on the night.

* The under 16 Camogs had a great win in the championship last week against Mayobridge/Aghaderg. Again this was a great performance by the girls but in particular Ciara Gibson who has just returned from injury. Clare Cleland turned in a great performance also. On this occasion we will hold trhe back page for Ashleen O’Neill who finished the game with five goals.well done to Ashleen in what was a great personal tally. The Camogs will now play An Riocht in the semi-final on 7 August at a venue yet to be decided.

* Good luck to the Under 14 Camogs who play in the semi final of the championship this week against Portaferry.

* There are camogie coaching sessions every Saturday morning from 10.00am to 11.00am in St Malachys Park. All young players upto 12 years of age are welcome to come along to learn and develop new skills.

*Commiserations to Rory Burns and Pairic Hardy with the exit of the Down Minor Hurlers to Clare in the All-Ireland Series. It was always going to be an uphill struggle for the lads against a team the caliber of their Munster counterparts. The Club are proud of the contribution and work the lads have made this season in the Down colours. Well done lads!

* There will be a fund raising Craft Fair organised by parents in the club this Thursday 2nd August from 10.00am to 4.00pm. There will be Arts, Crafts, Nic-Nacs, Sports Gear, Tea/Coffee, Cakes, & much more. There will be something for everyone. Everyone is welcome.
* Thank you to everyone who came along to support the monster bingo on Sunday in what turned out to be a really great afternoons fun. it was also a day of firsts. The vice chairman won his first ever line at bingo in his very first bingo
