Castlewellan GAC Weekly Notes

November 8, 2018

* The U-14's travelled to Drumaness on Monday night for a league encounter and came away with a hard fought but deserved win. In the first half the two sides spurned some glorious chances eventually coming off at half time with a share of the spoils, each registering 1-2, with Rory Guinness bagging the goal and points from Philip Maguire and Adam Garland. In the second half the town stepped it up and really took the game to Drumaness, with James McAleenan and Adam Garland driving forward from midfield. Garland netted another goal but Drumaness rallied to pull it back level with 5 minutes to go before a point from Gareth McKibben and a second goal for Guinness sealed the victory 3-4 to 1-6. Best for the town was Rory Guinness, James McAleenan and Adam Garland while at the back the superb Joe Cunningham and man of the match Cathal Caldwell secured the victory.

* It was agony and sheer ecstasy for our club players who represented Down this weekend in Football and Camogie. In the Ulster Minor Football Championship Semi Final the lads were beaten by Monaghan by three points. Rory Burns kept a clean sheet in goals and didn’t let his County down. Sean Doran was also on the panel. Well done to the lads for all the work they have put in with the county this year. you deserve credit for your all your efforts. The Under 16 County Camogie team lost by two points to Derry at Mayobridge. A great performance at midfield by Aoife Keown who scored five points just wasn’t enough. Anna Rogan played in the forward line. This was a game they should have won. Congratulations to Kevin Duffin and the Down Squad on their magnificent victory over Monaghan on Sunday. Kevin came on and registered a point in Down’s great comeback. He picked up an injury and was replaced late on by Liam Doyle. So roll on Sunday 22nd July. Down back in the Ulster Final. Well done lads

* The Seniors Footballers rich vein of form came to a halt when they were beaten 2-09 to 0-09 by Ballyholland at the victor’s venue. The Town conceded two poor goals – one in each half – and did not adapt themselves well on the night. On the night it was probably a fair result.

* The Girls Under 14 footballers had an emphatic win over Carryduff last week with a 10-08 to 0-02 score line. All the girls really played well but a special mention to Caoimhe Moorehead who scored five goals (yes five!). Well done Caoimhe. It will be hard to do that every week but well done her and to all the girls.

The Girls Under 12 footballers recorded a great 2-12 to 0-02 win over neighbours Bryansford. A really fantastic result with all the girls playing really well. A special mention to Betty, Mickey, Jackie and Gerard who helped out the management on the day with the team. Their assistance was really appreciated by all concerned.
