Castlewellan GAC Weekly Notes

November 8, 2018

* While the most of these Isles were enjoying the unexpected upturn in the weather which was of Mediterranean proportions we in this part of the world and our near neighbours endured torrential conditions which we are accustom to. It resulted in the postponement of our Edward Toner & May Steele Under 12 Tournaments at the weekend. We will run the tournament again this Saturday 8th October. All games are scheduled to be played in St. Malachy’s Park with the first games beginning at 10.30am and the finals scheduled for 3.00pm – 3.30pm. There will be a “Player of the Tournament” for both competitions sponsored by Bargain Land in Downpatrick.

* The Castlewellan Under 12 Boys Footballers travelled out to Leitrim for the third time this year and were defeated 3-14 to 1-10 in a great game of football in the Under 12½ Championship.  Castlewellan were first on the score sheet with 2 well taken points from Daire McVeigh and  Matthew Carville.  Adam Garland and Sean Keown added further points before Ruairi McGuinness blasted the ball to the roof of the net to leave the sides level, however a late goal and a point saw Leitrim with a 4 point lead at half time. Matthew Carville, Sean Keown and Ruairi McGuinness all added further points in the second half, however, Leitrim’s strength saw them run out winners in an end to end game of football.  Adam McAleese was in outstanding form, turning defence into attack at every opportunity.  Matthew Carville and Adam Garland worked tirelessly at midfied and up front Sean Keown and Ruairi McGuinness were in fine scoring form. Team: Cahal Caldwell, Daniel Cunningham, Ryan O’Rourke, Niall Garland, Adam McAleese, James McAleenan, Callum McKibben, Adam Garland (0-1), Matthew Carville (0-4), Conor Keenan, Sean Keown (0-3), Philip Maguire, Brian Brannigan, Daire McVeigh (0-1) , Ruairi McGuinness (1-1), Ethan Aulds, Cleveland Boyle, Ruairi Feenan, Callum McCabe, Jordan Valentine.

* The Under 10 Hurlers had a great 30 point win over Carryduff last week. It was a great work out for the young lads Mathew McCabe was proving to be a “chip of the old block” scoring 6 goals. Did Ciaran ever score six goals in a game? In fairness to Carryduff they were very short of a lot of their players. In true sporting tradition some of our boys played for Carryduff. Playing the game is more important and it was good everyone got a run out. Well done to Dara Rodgers for scoring for Carryduff. It was a disappointment for the lads at the weekend as their Hurling Blitz in Bredagh was also a victim of the poor weather.

* The Club started their Annual Draw last weekend which attracted a good crowd into the Club. The Executive Committee would like to thank all those members and friends of Caislean An Mhuilinn who purchased tickets. We appreciate the contribution made by everyone. The Winners were: Mediterranean Cruise – Kevan Owens; 40” TV – Hugh McCann; Sony play Station  & Bundle – Gabriel Monaghan; £400 Home heating Oil – Colm Og Crilly: Mini weekend In Ireland for two – Peter, Betty and Christine Cairns. £100 winners were; Dermot & Marie Cleland, James Waters, Paul Fitzpatrick, marie Campbell and Peter Fitzpatrick. The £50 winners were; Mark Murnin, Martin Keown, Fearghal McLaughlin, Dessie O’Neill, Tommy & Alice McBrien, Chris Kelly, Donard Rice, Danny Keown, Frankie Rooney and Mark Rice. Congratulations to all our winners. The second draw will take place on Saturday 5th November 2011.

* Our Senior Footballers had a good win over Clann Na Banna on Sunday past with a winning score line of 2-16 to 1-10. Having already qualified for the League Final, it is now about getting good competitive football in preparation for whoever our opponents will be. It was a good workmanlike performance with a good work rate from the lads. Our last league Game will be against Ballymartin who have qualified for the IFC Final. This will also be a stern test.
