Castlewellan GAC Weekly Notes

November 8, 2018

* It is mid-summer and its congratulations to our Under 14 Boys footballers who won the league last week. It had been neck and neck between the Liatriom Fontenoys and the Town with both team beating each other by two points at each other’s home venue. It has been a good season for the lads and they fully deserve their success. Well done to the lads who under the guidance of Micky McVeigh, Conor Fitzpatrick and Harry Toner have really excelled in the green jersey of the Town and deservedly have picked up a wee bit of silverware.

* “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.” So says John Ruskin who was a leading English art critic in 19th Century. He liked all sorts of weather! For most of us we fully prefer the glorious sunshine and temperatures experienced last week when over 100 children took part in Kelloggs Cúl Camp in our club. The children all enjoyed the five day's fun and promotion of our national games. The smiles on the children’s faces say it all. Thank you to all the visiting coaches, with special mention to club member's Andrea McClean, Liam Hardy and Cormac McCabe and all those who helped in any way to make it a successful week. Thanks also to Lawrence McAlinden for coming along and taking photograph's, all of which will be shortly available on the club website. As I pen this normal weather service has resumed…unfortunately!

* Best wishes goes out to two of our U12 player's Seán Barr and Michael Magorrian whom suffered recent injuries. We all hope to see you back in 'town colours as soon as you are able to.

* On Saturday our Year 4 and Year 6 footballer's travelled to Saul and Dundrum to take part in Football Blitz's. Both team's excelled with some great team work being displayed from all the boy's. Well done boys, you all can be very proud of your performances.

* Our Senior Hurlers played out an enthralling game with Portaferry last Monday night. Despite a four point defeat the scoreline of 0-20 to 2-18 will tell you a lot about our performance. The lads lead by four points at half time. Had we perhaps taken the simpler one pointers instead of the squandered 3 pointers – who knows! We ran out of a wee bit of steam in the last 15 minutes when the visitors did the damage and overcome a six point deficit. There were good performances from Collie McCann, Sean hardy. Fionnbarr Lennon, Thomas Jennings and Aidan Keown.

* The Senior Footballers returned to winning ways last Thursday night against Rostrevor in the Meadow. The game was barely 15 Seconds old when Daniel Morgan suffered a shoulder injury. We wish him well in his recovery. It was a game we were winning comfortably enough though we lapsed in the last few minutes and conceded a late goal which put respectability on the scoreline. Still it is another two points on the board to keep us ticking along nicely.

* It has not been a good weekend for the Reserve footballers. We were well beaten by Rostrevor Seconds team on Friday night and has more or less put an end to or league hopes. Malachy Rooney suffered a nasty wrist injury which will see him out of action for some time. We wish Malachy well in his recover. We also surrendered our Premier Reserve League Championship title also when we fell at home to Kilcoo.
