Castlewellan Notes

November 8, 2018

* Pride and place goes this week to the Under 16 Girls who clinched the County A Football League with an emphatic and comprehensive win over Loughinisland. This is the Clubs first piece of silverware of the season. Congratulations to the team and all their mentors. They have put in a lot of hard work and certainly showed a lot of style in this particular game. Well done to all.

* The Under 14 Camogie team qualified for the Under Shield Final when they beat Ballyholland last Friday Night. Great displays from Caitlin Small, Catriona Caldwell, Nicola McCabe, Aisling O’Neill and Aisling Connolly. They will play Longstone in the Final on 21 August.

* The under age teams of Castlewellan GAC are holding a sponsored walk on Sunday 31st July which will start from the Club at 12.30pm after Mass. They are playing their part by raising much need funds for our Club. We would ask all parents whose children are under 10 years old to accompany them on this walk. We look forward to seeing as many as possible out helping, encouraging and accompanying the children and youths of our Club. The efforts of all the children gathering up sponsorship has to be admired. We look forward to seeing them all on Sunday.

* Castlewellan Under 12 boys had a great victory over neighbours Bryansford last Sunday in Castlewellan winning 2-8 to 1-5 in an exciting game played in glorious sunshine.  The first half was evenly matched with Adam Garland scoring 3 points, including a well stuck ’45’.  Adam was in fine scoring form, adding a further 5 points in the second half and along with goals from Daire McVeigh and Ruairi McGuinness saw Castlewellan run out deserved winners.  Cahal Caldwell made some great saves in goals and in defence Daniel Cunningham, Matthew Muldoon, Sean Keown and Callum McKibben defended courageously. Adam Garland scored 8 points and Matthew Carville provided great support throughout.  Up front Ruairi McGuiness and Conor Keenan worked tirelessly.  In the second match Brian Brannigan socred a goal and a point, Mark Rice added another well worked goal and points from Ruairi McGuinness and Dara Tumilty saw Castlewellan win 2-3 to 1-2.  Team : Cahal Caldwell, Daniel Cuningham, Matthew Muldoon, Sean Keown, Callum McKibben, Adam Garland, Matthew Carville, Conor Keenan, Oisin O’Toole, Ruairi McGuinness, Daire McVeigh, Eoin Maginn, Cleveland Boyle, Brian Brannigan, Mark Rice, Daragh Fitzpatrick, Ethan Aulds, Dara Tumilty.

* A further reminder to all members that Castlewellan GAC Gift Scheme is now in full swing with a good uptake by members. However if there are other members who have yet to respond they are asked to do so before the end of July – just contact chairman Rory McCabe 07703536322 – We are asking each Gift Scheme member to donate a minimum of £10 per month (approx. £2.30 per week) for a 5 year period through our standing order payment scheme and to make the donation Gift Aid, because the club have been recognised as a charitable body and can claim a further 28p for every £1 contributed by any taxpayer from the Government.

* The Minors lost to Warrenpoint in an exciting game last Tuesday Night. The Point’s more physical presence and to be honest a wee bit more know how told in the end. There was a great individual performance by Calum Croskery who notched up 3-04 on the night. At the back there was a strong display by Aidan Docherty. The Minors will face Downpatrick in the Championship in the Town this week. In the last of these two teams the Town simply did not perform. We will be hoping for a better performance from the lads this week.
