SENIORS

Two weeks after a humbling championship exit at the hands of Cavan Gaels, the Seniors hosted the Gaels again in their final league match knowing a win was needed to qualify for the league semi-finals, at the expense of the Gaels. In blustery conditions, two very changed sides from the last outing played out an action packed encounter that saw the Stars prevail by 5-7 to 0-11.

Playing with a strong breeze, the Stars opened strong but both sides shared the opening four points before Philly Smith found the back of the next and Kingscourt kicked clear by 1-4 to 0-2. However, the Gaels replied strongly and as we approached halftime there was just a goal between them.  Then Kingscourt hit the turbo and added 1-2 in purple patch at the end of the half with Sean Og Gargan and Joe Dillon hitting super points in between a fantastic goal from Dillon to leave Kingscourt leading 2-6 to 0-4 at the break.

The Gaels opened the 2nd half strong and added a couple of points before Joe Dillon again found the net to cancel them out.  The Gaels realised goals were required in the final quarter but couldn’t get through the Kingscourt backline and were restricted to some frees and scores from distance.  As the game reached the end, substitute JP Reilly ran onto a broken ball and dribbled it towards the Gaels net before finishing it under the keeper to make it 4-7 to 0-11. Then less than a minute later, another substitute Ruairi O’Rourke chipped the keeper from 20 metres to finish the game in style.

The team left the pitch to a rousing reception which while not in any way making up for the championship exit last month, at least but some pride back into the Stars jersey. It also means that there is a real incentive to finish the season with a flourish and try and claim a League title that was narrowly missed out on last year.

JUNIORS

The Juniors face Killygarry in the Junior B Final in Virginia on Saturday 24th September @ 4pm as they look to secure their first Junior B since 2002. Best of luck to everyone involved.

U-14’s

Commiseration to the Boys U-14’s who played Lacken twice last week on 3G pitch in Kingspan Breffni Park in two thrilling championship semi-finals. On Monday night, they finished level on 3-6 to 1-12 before having to make the long trek back again on the Thursday night where they agonisingly lost out in a classic by 4-10 to 4-9.  Hard luck to all involved but well done on two super performances.

The Girls U-14’s also played twice during the week but had a better outcome.  On Tuesday night they edged by Lacken at home by 2-9 to 1-7 to reach the semi-final.  On Saturday morning, they headed up to Mullahoran and went goal crazy to book their place in the Final and keep their 100% winning record for the season.
