SENIORS & JUNIORS

Busy week for the Seniors with two games in the space of four days as they tried to recover from the Redhills defeat. First up was a trip to Gowna on Wednesday evening.  While an early Kingscourt goal from Darragh Gunne saw us hit the front, Gowna quickly took a grip on proceedings and a number of defensive mistakes allowed the home side to lead 2-5 to 1-2 at halftime.

The tide started to turn early in the second half with Alan Clarke coming to the fore  with some probing runs into the Gowna half forward line. The introduction of Kieran Gorman at midfield and Daryl Martin up front paid immediate dividends.  The Kingscourt defence now looked more assured and the increased possession started to tell on the score board.  Darragh Gunne kicked some important frees and a further goal put us right back in the game.  We continued to tack on further points to take the lead and while a late Gowna free made for a nervy finish, the lads ground out a hard-earned 2-9 to 2-8 win.

Next up was a long overdue home match against Lacken on Saturday evening. Playing the first quarter against a strong wind and biblicalesque rain the lads found themselves 1-4 to 0-1 down. As the conditions eased somewhat we managed to get back into things with good scores from Mossy Malone and Daryl Martin and but for some easy chances that went a begging we could have been a lot closer than the 2-4 to 0-6 halftime defecit.

A Philly Smith inspired third quarter saw us hit the front by 0-11 to 2-4 and while the conditions had all but abated we still looked likely to kick on for victory. However, Lacken dug in deep and the game swung in the balance in the final quarter as both sides exchanges scores and wides and at the end a 0-13 to 2-7 was probably a fair result.

The Junior game was a lot more straightforward with Kingscourt getting a goal midway through the first half and they never looked back running out comfortable 2-14 to 0-6 winners with a very youthful side.

Next up for both sides is a trip to Lavey on Sunday 29th May for a double header with the Juniors at 1pm and Seniors at 2.30pm, “as of now” at least….

UNDERAGE

The O’Raghallaigh Gaels U-16’s league  season finished last week with a heavy defeat to Crosserlough by 6-11 to 0-10 in Shercock.  That finishes of matters for the league and we wish all those involved that are sitting their Junior Cert the best of luck.Training will restart after the exams ahead of the Championship.

The 12s kept their good run going when a late goal saw them get the better to Bailieboro last week. Their final match takes place this evening (Monday) at home to Knockbride. After that, they head to Newry on the 4th June for their big annual blitz (previously U-10).  This event has 40 teams from all over the country and is always a great event. We hope to have pictures from this up on the website next week.
