U-14 FEILE
Last weekend saw the Feile festival hit Cavan with clubs all over the county hosting teams. Here in Kingscourt we had the pleasure of hosting Salthill/Knocknacarra from Galway. The players and management of this fine club were a credit to their parishes both on and off the field and simply blew the opposition away in the group stages. On Saturday afternoon, anyone who was lucky enough to be in the Park witnessed a truly fantastic occasion.
With the sun shining, the place was alive as busloads of kids from all over the country descended on Kingscourt for the Div. 1 semi-finals. Two cracking matches were played out as Kilmacud Crokes defeated Douglas by 2-6 to 2-3 and Salthill defeated Watty Grahams (Derry) by 2-4 to 0-3. That evening, the Kingscourt and Salthill sides spent a most enjoyable evening with a pitch & putt challenge that was enjoyed by all, even if there was some loose interpretations of the rules!
The following day a big Kingscourt support made their way to Breffni to support Salthill in the final however despite a bright start they eventually succumbed to a strong Kilmacud side by 2-6 to 0-3. Our own lads also did the club proud. They recovered from a tough opening defeat to give John Mitchells (Kerry) the fright of their lives and were cruelly denied victory when a late penalty give the visitors a 1-5 to 2-1 victory. Despite this, they re-grouped and finished of with a impressive 1-12 to 2-3 over Shercock.
All told, it was a quite amazing experience for all involved and illustrated perfectly everything that makes the GAA such a unique organisation. Their were friendships and links formed between both clubs that will last a lifetime and anyone who had the pleasure of being involved at any level will never forget it. We would like to thank all club members who helped out with all the organising and running of the event.
SENIORS
After recent impressive challenge performances over Nobber and Moynalvey, the Seniors revert to league action this week with a home match against Knockbride in Divisions 2 on Thursday 10th at 8.15pm. In there last match before the championship, they will be eager to continue their good form and we would ask for a big home support in this local derby. Go on, the tennis is over, there’s nothing to keep you in the house now!!
U-21’s
The U-21’s made the long trip to Mullahoran last Wednesday night for the opening round of the U-21 Championship. A quick start saw the Stars lead early before the home side regained parity by halftime. However, the second half proved a more difficult task for the Stars and Mullahoran’s greater strength and fitness saw them pull away in the end for a deserved victory. Credit to our lads though who had, far from ideal preparation and put in a very creditable performance.
MINORS
The Minors are back training now and have two weeks to prepare for their top of the table clash with Cavan Gaels on Sunday 20th. Hopefully the great form they showed before the break can be re-discovered ahead of the clash with the perennial Minor kingpins of the county. U-16’s The U-16’s face Laragh Utd in Cootehill tonight (7th July) in a league play-off to see who qualifies for the semi-final. Best of luck to all involved.
