Bride Rovers GAA Notes

Under 21 Hurlers go into Action

On Thursday night of next week, August 27th, our U-21 hurling team begin their championship campaign. Last year we reached the East Cork U-21 Final but lost to St Catherines. In last year’s campaign we played Russell Rovers in Aghada and it’s the Ballycotton side are our first round opponents this year. Fresh from winning their first ever Minor ‘A’ hurling championship title when defeating fellow parish Cloyne, Russell Rovers will be a very different side this year. They’ve already defeated us in the Junior ‘A’ hurling championship and that side contained many of the U-21 players. Our players and selectors have put in a big effort to date and have played a number of games. It’s all down to the performance on the night however and after our recent senior defeat against C.I.T. ‘twould be great if this team could put up a good display. The game is timed for 7pm, in Caherlag.

Junior Football League 1

On Sunday morning last played Midleton in a Junior Football League (Div. 1) game. We’re out of the J. ‘A’ Football Championship since the spring and Midleton play the East Cork semi final next weekend. Our team on Sunday was a mixture of Junior ‘A’ and Junior ‘B’ players. Midleton won by 6 points 1-10 to 0-7. We’ve still to play the U-21 Football final and the Junior ‘B’ Football Championship first round against Youghal.

Best of Luck Girls

Best of luck to Grace Kearney and Eleanor Ahern who are both on the Cork Senior ‘B’ Ladies Football team. This team contest the All Ireland Senior ‘B’ Final against Dublin in Thurles on this Saturday afternoon. Grace and Eleanor have starred with Bride Rovers, Loreto Fermoy and with Cork underage teams over the last few years so we wish them all the best in this Final.

Well Done

Well done to all those who got their Leaving Cert results last week. Hopefully points were got by all to pursue your chosen career paths.

Jamesey Kelleher Cup

In recent times there has been discussion at East Cork Board level about the Jamesey Kelleher Cup. The trophy is now 62 years old and in need of repair or replacement. The general consensus is that a new trophy should be purchased. It was on Friday November 21st 1947 that East Cork Board Chairman, Tom Barry N.T. (The Master) and East Cork Board Treasurer Bertie Murphy bought the Jamesey Kelleher Cup in Cork City. Famous Dungourney and Cork Hurler, Kelleher had died in 1943 and it was felt that his memory should be commemorated by naming the Trophy for the East Cork Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship after him.

Good Win for ‘The Village’

It was great to see Ballinacurra winning their first ever Co. Hurling title last weekend. On Saturday evening at Pairc Uí Rinn the men from ‘The Village’ defeated Randal Óg from West Cork by 4-12 to 1-20 in a thriller. Well done to all concerned particularly Tipperary native Ollie Parson who has done so much for the club over many decades.
Development Committee
The Club Development Committee reported back to the Club Executive last Monday night. They’ve done a lot of work and their proposals are being examined with a view to being finalized shortly.

Cork v Tyrone

Safe travelling to all those going to Dublin on Sunday for the Cork v Tyrone All Ireland Football semi final clash. Tyrone are reigning All Ireland Champions but Cork are a very much improved side from last year.
