 UNDER 21:
The U-21 team have qualified for the County Final thanks to a hard fought but well deserved victory over their old rivals from Johnstown. Played in difficult conditions the young men of Elphin stuck to their task and worked tirelessly to the end to earn their just reward. The opening period saw both teams finding scores hard to come by but Clann got a crucial score on ten minutes with the award of a penalty against Kevin Beirne, which was duly despatched to the net by Donie Shine. Elphin fought back well but still somehow found themselves behind by 1-3 to 5 points at half time, after having a lot of possession and having three goals disallowed for square balls. The second half opened with nothing to separate the teams but Elphin gradually gained the upper hand. With ten minutes to go and the game carefully balanced Elphin got the break they needed when the umpire raised his green flag after Ronan Brady had kicked in a long ball which the goalie was adjudged to have carried over the line. This left Elphin 5 points up and looking comfortable. But Clann never gave in and fought right till the end. A great save by the Elphin’s Shane Reynolds with five left in the game helped maintain the advantage to the end. Jimmy Reilly refereed what was a tough but sporting affair.
