G.A.A. 125

As we celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the GAA’s foundation this weekend, we remember in a special way Fr. Edmond Barry. Fr. Barry was a native of Carrigtwohill and came to this parish in 1885. In 1887 he was instrumental in starting hurling and football clubs in Bartlemy and Rathcormac respectively. Though “Fr. Barry’s Teams” only participated for about five years, they were very successful at senior level. Rathcormac Footballers won the O’Brien Board Co. Senior Football Championship in 1889 and then Bartlemy Hurlers lost the Senior Hurling Championship final to St Finbarrs. Fr. Barry laid a great foundation for Gaelic Games in the parish. The 109th Anniversary of Fr. Barry’s death is on this Friday May 22nd. He is buried to the left of the main altar in Bartlemy Church.
