Footballers Win League Tie.
Our junior footballers had a good win over Glenville in Div.1 of the East Cork Football League on last Thursday evening. Fielding an experienced team we scored 3 10 to Glenville’s 10 points for a hard fought victory. We will be playing the first round of the Junior B Grade Football championship v Youghal shortly – a tough task as Youghal always fielded three adult teams Intermediate, Junior A and Junior B but this year they have regraded their second team to Junior B level.

There is a grand old saying in Irish “Mol an Oige agus tiocfaidh se” –praise and see after the youth and they’ll prosper, well how true it is especially at under age level in GAA clubs. Last Sunday in Croke Park we saw Henry Sheffelin, Tommy Walsh, Eoin Kelly and Lar Corbett and all the other top class hurlers starring in a memorable All Ireland Final. They all began their hurling in their local school and local club playing under 12 for their native parishes. That’s where it all begins so well done to the Bride Rovers under 12 team on their great win on Saturday last in the East Cork final replay in Lisgoold. The mentors of all our under age teams have been doing Trojan work but sometimes despite all the effort the results don’t come. Hurling is a game of passion, skill, tradition –racy of the Irish soil. We are celebrating the 125th birthday of the GAA this year, around this time of the year in 1884 Cusack and Davin were planning the first meeting in Thurles which got the whole thing going. Then around this time of the year 81 years ago –in 1928, the Barrys, Foleys, Fitzgeralds, Healys, Roches, Murleys, Hoskins and Aherns were planning a fateful meeting for the Bandroom in Bartlemy which saw the Bride Rovers Club Founded. There is great tradition and pride in those who wear the Green, White and Gold of the club and it’s great to see a new generation coming on. Well done to all the players and their parents and also to the team mentors who have put in so much time with these young lads.
The countdown has started already for Sunday week’s All Ireland Football Final between Cork and Kerry. It’s a repeat of the 2007 Final which we all want to really forget. This is a different Cork team which face into the Croke Park decider with no fear of age-old rivals Kerry. Tickets will be very scarce –as always in the run up to a Final. Club members who are paid up for 2009 are reminded that names must be with the Club Runai before this Sunday September 13th in order to be in the Draw.
