Club Notes For The Week

November 8, 2018

Under 21’s in Action
On Thursday August 27th our U-21 hurlers are in East Cork Championship action. The game v Russell Rovers was originally timed for 7pm in Caherlag but has been brought forward to 6.30 because the evenings are closing in fast. Russell Rovers recent Minor ‘A’ hurling championship wins over Cloyne and Youghal (in the MAHC final) gives a good indication of how strong a side they are. They’ve won several titles at the ‘B’ and now in ‘A’ grade in East Cork in recent years. We have a strong team too with most of the side having played at Senior, Junior ‘A’ and Junior ‘B’ championship level this season. Our most recent clash with Russell Rovers was in the ‘back door’ of the East Cork Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship in Cobh a month ago when we were well beaten. In fairness to our players they’ve put in a great effort at training during the summer under the watchful eyes of the selectors. No championship game is easy and this will be a big challenge. Go for it lads – and a reminder to fans again that the throw-in is now 6.30pm.

Cork in All Ireland Football Final
‘Twill be all talk about tickets for the next few weeks with Cork in the All Ireland Football final on September 20th. Nineteen years ago Cork won the Senior double and Conor Counihan – the present manager, was on of the stars of that side. Paid up club members who wish to be in the draw for tickets should give in their names to Club Runaí Nicola Barry as soon as possible.
For a strong football county it’s amazing that Cork have only 6 All Ireland Senior titles 1890, 1911, 1945, 1973, 1989 and 1990. Despite this Cork are still in fifth position in the Football Roll of Honour behind Kerry, Dublin, Galway and Meath.

Well Done Girls
Congratulations to Grace Kearney and Eleanor Ahern who were members of the Cork Ladies Football Team that defeated Dublin in the Aisling McGinn Memorial Tournament Final. This is in effect the Senior ‘B’ All Ireland and Cork in recording their third win in a row, showed how strong Ladies Football is in Leeside. Grace and Eleanor have starred with Bride Rovers and Loreto Fermoy over the last few years and are outstanding representatives for the club.

Development Committee Report
At the last Club Executive meeting a report was given from the Club Development Committee. This group had been given the task at looking at future developments in Pairc na Bríde, both in the short and long term. Further work remains to be done with costings etc. and hopefully before the year is out an announcement of planned projects will be unveiled.

Club Executive Meeting
The next meeting of the Club Executive is on next Monday night August 31st in the Clubrooms at 9pm.
