Club Notes For The Week

 

At dark and murky Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Sunday evening last, our senior hurling championship dream for 2009 was shattered by the students of C.I.T. After the highs of last year when we reached our first ever Senior Final, this defeat is a major setback. We were beaten by six points on the night.

 

As expected C.I.T. were a very focussed and strong team and there’s no denying they were too good for us on the night. Yet if we’d managed to score even half of our twelve wides, if what looked like a perfect goal hadn’t been disallowed, the result could have been so different. With Terry Broderick taking over in goal form Denny Fitzgerald who is serving overseas with the Irish Army, we started the game in a confident fashion.

 

The first quarter was tough and close with scores hard to come by. Then between the 20^th and 25^th minute the game changed dramatically. C.I.T. goaled from play and had a second from a penalty to go 7 points up. We looked to be in serious trouble at this stage. Coming up to half time however we came right back into the contest. A great clearance by Brian Murphy was touched to the net by Donal Ryan in a manner in which he’s got so many goals over recent years. Jerome hit over a super point and we were just four points behind 2-4 to 1-3 at the break. It was C.I.T. who restarted the strongest adding three points to go seven clear again.

 

Then Jerome had a great goal and it seemed we were back with a great chance. The students however had a third goal and were six points up with eight minutes left. In that time we had a goal disallowed and hit five wides. We certainly had the chances to have brought the margin down to the minimum if our shooting was better. In the end we lost by 3-10 to 2-7. Our lads battled hard right to the end but we simply couldn’t chalk up the scores. We scored just 2 points from play and in senior hurling that is simply not good enough.

 

C.I.T. got 7 from play, Newtownshandrum got 16 and Sars got 17. Since the Blackrock game a huge effort has been put in by all the players and the backroom team and then when a result like this happens it’s very disappointing. That’s sport, the joy and the heartbreak. It’s the pain of defeats like this that makes victories all the sweeter.

 

Since our elevation to Senior ranks our hurling team has given us fantastic times and no doubt but we will have more great days in the future. Thanks lads for the effort against C.I.T. and to our very, very vocal supporters who were tremendous as always on Sunday night.

On Monday night in the semi final of the Premier Intermediate Football ‘Relegation Competition’ at Pairc na Bríde Glenville defeated neighbours Killavullen. Killavullen now face Mayfield in the Relegation Final on this Friday night at 7pm in Pairc na Bríde. The losers of this game drop down to the Intermediate Grade for 2010. Club members are asked to be at the pitch at 6.15. The Minor double header fixed for next Sunday has been cancelled. Instead the Fermoy v Castlelyons minor hurling game goes ahead on nest Tuesday night August 18^th in Pairc na Bríde at 7pm.

 

 

Well done to Grace Kearney and Eleanor Ahern who played with Cork in the All Ireland ‘B’ Ladies Football Championship semi final in Fermoy on Sunday. Cork now face Dublin in the final of this competition on Saturday August 22^nd.

 

 

Club members who want tickets for the Cork v Tyrone game on August 23^rd need to have their order in by next Monday. Stand and Terrace tickets and Family tickets will be available but you must contact Club Runaí Nicola Barry on or before next Monday August 17^th.

 

 

All in the club and the parish extend best wishes to Michael Carey of Monanig who is taking part in the 600Km Tour de Munster cycling event from August 13^th to 16^th. Michael will be one of the 80 cyclists who are raising funds for the Chernobyl Childrens Project International. The tour, which will go through all six Munster counties, will pass through Rathcormac on this Thursday August 13^th at approximately 10.45am.
