Senior Championship off ‘til August
As we half expected our Senior Hurling Championship game against C.I.T. has been deferred for two weeks. If Cork had beaten Galway last Saturday night they would have been playing Waterford on Sunday next and our game would have gone off. In any case Galway got the better of the Rebels so now there’s no hurry with championship fixtures so four quarter finals have been put back to the weekend of August 8th/9th. To be honest ‘tisn’t the most satisfactory situation as players and mentors try to make arrangements for holidays etc. Well now the position is that our game against C.I.T. is now fixed for Sunday August 9th at 6pm in Pairc Ui Chaoimh with Glen Rovers and Newtownshandrum to follow. The previous evening Sars and Na Piarsaigh and Erins Own and the Barrs will have played. The extra two weeks will give us a chance to play a few more games. Hopefully also the few niggling injuries we have will now be well cleared up. Training is going well with great numbers attending. As we went into the Club Executive meeting on Monday night ‘twas great to see our 20 hurlers have a ‘puck-around’ – these were the Club’s Junior ‘B’ team, our third adult team who were down to play Erins Own in the championship on Tuesday night last in Lisgoold.
Cork Beaten
The long promised breakthrough for the Galway hurlers came at Semple Stadium on Saturday night last. For only the 5th time in 125 years the Rebels were beaten by the men of the West who now have a tricky task s they meet Waterford on Sunday next again in Semple Stadium. Well done to Cork manager Denis Walsh and all the panel. Denis and his backroom team have two more years in charge so we can look forward to great games in the future.
Matches in the Pitch
We had tw important games in Pairc na Bríde last week. On Tuesday night 2008 Junior Hurling Champions Carrignavar got the season back on track when they defeated Watergrasshill in Round 2 (the Back Door) of the 2009 Junior Hurling Championship. Then on Friday night we had the final that no one wants to be in. This was the 2009 Premier Intermediate Hurling Relegation Final between Mallow and St Catherines. The ‘prize’ for the losers here was the drop down to the Intermediate grade for 2010. playing against a strong breeze St Catherines looked to be in a very strong position at the break when they trailed by just 2 points – most people thought a lead of 6 or 7 points would be needed for Mallow to win. On the turn over St Catherines got to work quickly and soon there was only a point between the sides. Scores were hard to come by and with ten minutes left a draw and extra time looked a distinct possibility. Then Mallow struck for the all important goal and went on from there to win. Thanks to all who helped out for both games and to the clubs involved for their help with the match programmes.
On this Thursday night July 23rd we host a Minor ‘B’ Hurling Championship game between Lisgoold and Carrignavar at 7.30pm. At the time of writing there is a possibility that the Premier Intermediate Football relegation tie between Killavullen and Glenville may be played in Pairc na Bríde at the weekend.
70 Years Ago
On July 27th 1939 at Dungourney the Bride Rovers Junior ‘B’ team defeated Castlelyons in the championship by 7-1 to 4-4. This was the Rovers second team ( the A Grade team was beaten by Aghada 3-1 to 2-2) and they were later defeated in the ‘B’ grade championship by Dungourney.
