On Tuesday last we travelled to Castedaly, in an evenly contested first half the home side scored a goal against the run of play to lead at halftime 1:7 to 0:2. The second half saw an improved performance from The Downs but Castledaly  finished strongly to win by a flattering margin. This game was played in terrible conditions St Marys held a slight lead at halftime 0:4 to 0:2. The lead changed sides  on a number of times during the second half  with St Marys holding on for the win in the final minutes. At home on Thursday evening we secured two points for our second team, we dominated the first half scoring to lead a halftime 2:4 to 0:6. We had to withstand a spirited fight back from Ballynacarrgy in the second half to hold on for the minimum  of wins. The lads played a useful challenge game in Rhode on Saturday morning

last. Led by this week’s captain Mark Nugent, we played some decent

football against a determined home side. Thanks to all the parents who

drove and to Stephen Derby and colleagues in Rhode for the game.

Tonight Wednesday, the lads travel to Athlone for their final league

game with throw in at 7pm. Bus leaving The Downs at 6pm sharp.

On this Saturday July 21st, we participate in the annual Gowna Blitz –

bus leaving The Downs at 9am. More details at training which continues

on Fridays at 630pm – new players always welcome.

We are now providing a First Aid officer for our Friday evening coaching sessions. New volunteers are always welcome and the Friday evening slots are provided on a rota basis. We opened our championship campaign on Sunday last at home. The Downs narrowly got the better of the first half exchanges and led at halftime  1:5 to1:2.  In the second half The Downs  were more successful in converting possession  into scores and defended skilfully to secure a deserved win. The Ladies Football are collecting bags of clothes as a fundraiser, so you can now de- clutter and help the club raise funds. Bags of clothes can be left with any team coach or committee member or in The Shop. Please ask family, neighbours, friend and co-workers to fill a bag.
