Under 16 Championship Semi-final  The Downs 4:7 Garrycastle 1:14
Well done to our U16 Lads on a fine win against a gallant Garrycastle side last Thursday evening in Kinnegad. This game was played in a great spirit with tough direct football and refereed excellently under difficult conditions by Michael Gordon. We played against a very strong wind in the first half and our backs performed great under constant pressure. They were well assisted by our half forward line and midfield who worked back and to ease the pressure. PJ Maguire and Cian Quinn scored a goal each after good approach play by the team right throughout the field. We trailed 2.02 to 1.08 but were pleased with the effort under the conditions. Both sides raised their game in the second half and the lead changed hands several times. We were under pressure when Dean Moran made a great attacking run down the left and his long drive smashed to the net like a rocket. To their credit Garrycastle came back at us with great points and took the lead again. Up stood PJ Maguire again and scored another well take goal to edge us in front followed by a good point.  Garrycastle  came back with 2 points to leave 1 between the teams with time almost up. We attacked again and got a crucial score to put us in front. Garrycastle were given one more chance and as they attacked Pat Duncan made a superb interception and came away with the ball. The final whistle sounded and we were greatly relieved to be in front 4.07 to 1.14. We dug deep and the excellent drive we showed in the second half just swung the result. On the night we ask many of the lads to perform roles that were out of the norm and they all delivered for the team. County final beckons against Killucan on Thursday evening in Kinnegad. Please come out to support the team. Thanks to Coralstown-Kinnegad for having the facilities well organised.  Team Jeff Mc Cormick, Pat Duncan, Thomas Egan, Dean Moran, Shane Raleigh, Dean Daly, Peter Murray, Finbar Thompson, PJ Maguire, Niall Coates, Sean Cullen, Jake Cahill, Luke Loughlin, Cian Quinn, Kevin Newman.
