Under 12 Phase 1 Review
The Downs U12 Girls first competitive fixture of the league played at home was against Rochfordbridge on the main pitch. A truly entertaining game of football was played with fantastic skills on display from both teams. The away team had the Downs girls on the backfoot from the start and raced into a commanding lead. However, our girls played with great heart and commitment and earned a draw by grabbing three points without reply in the final 10 minutes to earn a well-deserved draw. All credit to both teams for a wonderful display of football skills

The next match was on the road again against our near neighbours, Coralstown/Kinnegad. A disappointing squad turnout had our team playing against the recently crowned county community games winners with one player less for the duration of the match. No superlatives could describe the team performance. Playing with the wind in the first half the Downs girls went into the break only one point in arrears. With the extra player and with wind advantage, it looked ominous for the second half as Coralstown/Kinnegad struck an early goal. However, the Downs Dozen had other ideas and as in displays throughout the year, they upped the second half performance to win by one point. What an amazing display by the whole team !!!

The Downs girls succumbed to a very strong, talented and skillful Milltown team. From the offset playing into a stiff breeze, we were second best in all sectors of the field. Trailing 2-05 to 0:02 at break, it didn’t get any better shortly afterwards as Milltown scored 1-02 in quick succession. However, true to The Downs girl’s spirit, and as shown in past games, our second half performance was vastly improved and our girls played with great commitment and passion right to the end of the game. As always with this bunch of players, regardless of winning or losing they left the field smiling and looking forward to the next challenge.

The final game of phase 1 was away to Loughnavalley. Played in glorious sunshine, it was nip-and-tuck for much of the first half – with both teams evenly matched. However, three goals in quick succession saw us trail by 1-02 to 3-02 at half time. As demonstrated in past games, the Downs girls second half performance brought extra intensity and pressure to the game, and brought us to being two points ahead with only minutes to go. However, the honours went to the home team with the winning score coming from the last kick of the game.
