Club notes for week starting Monday 18th April 2011

November 7, 2018

Official Opening of New Stand and Dressing Rooms.
On Sunday we officially opened the Stand and Dressing Room, the day started with footballers from both the GAA and Ladies Football club playing mini games in the brilliant sunshine and entertaining the large attendance with their excellent skills and competiveness.    The official opening   was performed    by Cristóir Ó Cuana, Uachtarán Cumann Lúthcleas Gael who spoke on respect and loyalty for the  jersey, the club and the importance of volunteerism and community for clubs. The Stand is dedicated to the friend, supporters, members of the club and local community.  Through your generosity you have made this project possible. The President was very generous with his time in talking with our young players and having photographs taken with the various groups.  Our senior players then played defeating Tubberclare in a league division 1 game. The day ended with our Scor group providing entertainment in the hall to an appreciative crowd.  Thanks to all who helped in organising the event and making it the success it was and those who  helped out on the day. A special and sincere thanks to all the ladies who worked tirelessly in the clubhouse providing refreshments for the  large crowd who attended the days celebrations your efforts were greatly appreciated by all. Souvenir programs of the day are available, you can get a copy from Sean Carroll or Aiden McGuire.

League Div 1              The Downs 0:19         Tubberclare 1:7
In excellent conditions for football we hosted Tubberclare in The Downs on Sunday evening. Tubberclare started the sharper and had four points on the board before The Downs raised a flag, however Tubberclare replied with a goal to leave the score 1:4 to 0:2 at the end of the first quarter. For the remainder of the half  The Downs out scored Tubberclare by 4 points  to 1 to trail at halftime 0:6 to 1:5.  The Downs totally transformed their performance in the second half to out score the opposition 13 points to 2 and emerge deserved winners.  Team: Ciaran McCormack, Declan Lynam, Mark Dalton, Stephen Cleary, Conor Carley, Greg Crowley, Jack Hogan, Noel Molloy, John Smyth, Barry Conroy, Cian Kiely, Luke Folan, Stephen Devine, Tommy Cleary, Shane Power. Subs Used: Seamus O’Leary, Michael O’Connor, Keith Shanley, David Smyth, Adam Price.

League Division 7      The Downs 2.09        Mullingar Shamrocks 2.09
Last Tuesday we played Shamrocks in Springfield and shared the points. We started well but failed to finish and fell behind after conceding 2 early goals. Over carrying and poor passing cost us.  Our approach play was good but we were opting for long efforts with little success. We got better results when we played fast ball to Shane Carroll at full forward and just before half time he blasted low to the net to keep us in touch. Prior to this Padraig Corcoran and PJ Maguire kicked good points. We trailed 1.05 to 2.07 at the break. Second half we played more direct football with PJ and Michael O Connor dominating midfield. A good move up the middle found Shane inside the big square and when he blasted to the net we looked likely to finish winners. However we over carried and delayed the ball in again for long spells and Mullingar hit 2 points to go 3 up with 3 mins remaining. Then we attacked with vigour again and Kyle Gavin hit 2 mighty points to leave 1 in it. We won the kick out and found Kiernan Carroll on the 40 where he was fouled. A quick free by Shane to Michael O Connor who put Larry Donohue through for the equaliser. This was the least we deserved and the spirit and passion we showed to come back was tremendous. Cian Carthy, Conor Thompson and Pat Leavy played excellent in defence and certainly kept us in the game during the second half. Vinny Connelly also was very sharp and PJ Maguire showed what a talent he is with his display of fielding and overall play. Up front while all contributed we need to be more clinical  in finishing. Had we taken scores or better options we would have won this game. Thanks to all who played especially the older guys who helped fulfil the fixture. Team K Maguire, C Carthy, C Thompson, M Leavy, K Gavin, D Reilly, N Doherty, V Connelly PJ Maguire,D Ayers, L Donohue, K Smullen, D  Bergin, S Carroll, P Cochrane. Subs used M O Connor, K Carroll.
