Club of the Year entry for 2000

November 7, 2018

South Mayo GAA Club of the Year 2000

Sponsored by the Ulster Bank

Our Entry

a)     Tournaments

We again maintained our annual tournament for a late, lamented club member – Billy Diskin. We travelled to Clonbur for this fixture and triumphed, but we cite the match more as an indication of our commitment to commemorating a man who played for both clubs, and also for Mayo.

Last January, we hosted Ladies Football, Men’s Football and Camogie teams from Trinity College, Dublin. They played games locally against Carnacon, Mayo U21s, and IT Sligo.

b)       Improvements

We moved our entrance gate to a more advantageous position near Flanagan Park.

c)       Cultural Activities

We now host our own Web Site under the umbrella web-site for this region, www.lakedistrict.ie. Sample cuttings from the site are enclosed. This site is used to promote the club and the region, and also encourages members to write an article or take a photograph.

d)       Community Work

We produced a book, A Day in the Life, commemorating the parish of Ballinrobe at the turn of the New Millennium. It featured photos taken in Ballinrobe – or of Ballinrobe people all over the world – on Millennium Eve and Millennium Day. The book embraced the entire parish and  brought to the fore new people within our club who had not previously been involved in its administration. They were encouraged to take a photograph or write a caption. It has sold extremely well. A copy of A Day in the Life is enclosed.

We are members of Lake District Enterprise Ltd, the organisation promoting the social, economic and cultural development of this region. The hosting of Trinity College, Dublin, was part of our contribution to the economic development of the town and region.

Our members took part in various Church Gate collections, including Spina Bifida, Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation, Concern, and Epilepsy.

e)       Hosting Games Other Than Those Organised By The South Board

Mayo Junior Football Semi-final, The Neale v Castlebar Mitchels

Mayo Junior B Championship final – Kilmeena v Davitts

Welcome Inn League Play-off – Ballintubber v Davitts

Mayo U21 A semi-final

Connacht Inter-Firms Football Final – Allergan v Abbotts

Numerous Colleges games, including First Year Championship and League finals. Our pitch is one of the most available for colleges games all year around.

Mayo Ladies Intermediate Semi-final – The Neale v Tourmakeady

Ladies National Football League – Mayo v Tyrone

The Mayo Senior Ladies and Men’s teams both trained on our pitch, as did the Mayo U21 team.

*      Ballinrobe GAA Club won the South Mayo Club of the Year title for 1999. In 2000, with the entry above, plus our good marks for our high standard of facility presentation at Flanagan Park, we were second to Kilmaine GAA Club.
