Colmcille GFC Notes

November 8, 2018

On Saturday 2nd April I had the pleasure of accompanying several members of the club along with members of the North Longford men’s group and many people from throughout the parish to the annual Dublin-Longford Association Gala Dinner Dance. The Association recognises two people each year for their achievements and contribution to Longford as a whole. The Longford Person of the Year was awarded to Martin Skelly, Chairperson of the Leinster Council. The Special Recognition Award was presented to our own Pearse Daly. He was honoured by the Association for his outstanding contribution to the north Longford community through his work with the Longford Leader, his work as an agricultural inspector and for his lifelong dedication to the GAA. It is impossible to overstate the work Pearse has done and continues to do. He compiles the North Longford notes meticulously each week without fail. He serves Colmcille GFC as a member of the executive committee and represents the club as a delegate to the county board, a role which he has fulfilled for many years for several different clubs. His commitment to his duties is unrivalled and an inspiration. Pearse is, without doubt, thoroughly deserving of such recognition. As a community we are truly blessed to have the benefit of Pearse’s dedication and wisdom. It was, indeed, an honour and wonderful experience to be present at the event. We send him our sincere congratulations and best wishes. We also congratulate Martin Skelly on his award and the Dublin-Longford Association for hosting the event.

Operation Transformation continues with the usual programme throughout the week. The Sunday walks will continue at 8.30am, leaving from the cross in Rathmore. Fr. McGee Park will also be open for use on Tuesday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30pm. All are welcome to participate in the walks and to make use of the park. We would also like to thank everyone for their continued support.

As part of the series of events taking place for Operation Transformation a 13K Lake View Walk will take place on April 30th. This event is being run jointly between the club and the Colmcille branch of St. Christopher’s. The walk will take in the spectacular scenery of the area is for a very worthy cause. We encourage the entire community to get involved. There will be alternative routes to cater for all fitness levels. The cost of entry is €10 for adults and €5 for U-16s. A very large turnout is expected so we encourage all to register early and avoid the rush on the day. Further details on how to register is available by contacting John Reilly on 085-7322857 or by e-mailing secretary@colmcille.longford.gaa.ie.

No doubt the group of cyclists in the area will not have gone unnoticed. These brave souls are in training for a sponsored cycle from Croke Park to Colmcille. This is another excellent idea to promote fitness and help the club in the process. The big cycle will take place on Saturday 25th June. There is already a large group participating in the cycle but all are welcome to get involved. The more the merrier.  Anyone who is interested in taking part can contact Joe Mulligan on 086-8222150 or Shane McGauran on 087-9254868 or by e-mailing smcgauran@hotmail.com.
