Intermediate:

Coolaney/Mullinabreena 0.11  Drumcliffe 1.08

Coolaney/Mullinabreenaand Drumcliffe shared the spoils in this round two intermediate championshipgame played at Coola last Saturday evening. Both side accepted the point asfair and indeed parity was a just outcome for this hard fought encounter. Thefinal score read Drumcliffe 1.08 C/M 0.11.

Both sidestraded scores early on as this game settled into a tight, physical affair withlittle or no space afforded for open football. Frees from O’Brien and Finanfollowed by the score of the day from Enda Kivlehan saw C/M lead three pointsto two after fourteen mins. Drumcliffe then hit a purple patch notching a goaland three points to lead 1.05 to 0.3 on twenty five mins. The goal resultedfrom a free that dropped short on the edge of the square before being flickedto the net. C/M responded with points from E Kivlehanand Finan to leave it 1.06 to 0.5 at the interval.

The secondperiod resumed in similar fashion with the sides sharing possession and twofurther added points each left it 1.08 to 0.7 after fifteen mins. C/M seemed togrow in stature from this juncture and began to control proceedings. Theygradually pegged back the gap scoring the last four points of the matchunanswered. Three of these were from the boot of Finan whilst Conor Gormanchipped in also. Indeed C/M were the team looking most like winning near theend before ref Malachy Maher blew for the conclusion leaving the sidesdeadlocked.

Best forC/M were Cian O’Dowd and Ray Connolly at the back whilst Kieran Finan, EndaKivlehan and Declan McCormack performed well in attack. There was a lot to belearned from this gritty type performance which will no doubt advance thisyoung side considerably. Next up is St. Farnans next Saturday in Enniscrone at6pm. Another battle lies ahead no doubt.
