Minor Final:

The Division two Minor final took place last Friday evening between Coolaney/Mullinabreena and St. Farnans at Dromard in ideal conditions with the mercury sitting at a balmy twenty degrees Celsius. Raymond Connolly opened the account for C/M with two good points from frees. St. Farnans soon settled however and with their forwards on top they went four points to two ahead. The game was now in free flow style with both sides trading scores. A point from Joe Henry and three from Connolly kept them in touch. C/M had a good spell before the break with two goal chances spurned, one a fine save from Criostoir Davey and another off the crossbar from the lively Eoghain O’Dowd. Connolly added another to leave it nine seven to Farnans at the interval.

C/M dominated from the off in the second period and hit four points on the trot, two from Connolly and two from substitute Darren Coleman to leave it 11 to 9. C/M were reduced to 12 men with James Henry dismissed after 10 mins. St. Farnans hit three points in a good spell interjected by a Conor McCormack point following great work by Stephen Barrett. The sides were now level at 12 each. The next five minutes saw C/M dominate midfield and in defence but were unable to convert five chances, among them two more goal opportunities. Eoghain O’Dowd finally found the range before the decisive score of this game. A speculative ball was launched into the C/M box, somehow broke off the unlucky Cian O’Dowd and was fired to the net to leave it 1.12 to 13. C/M again responded through Connolly followed by another point from St. Farnans. In one last gallant effort to find a goal C/M broke up field in a fine move only for the unlucky Colin Marren to miss narrowly by the upright. This entertaining encouter was whistled up at 1.13 to 14 points.

Team: G Lynch, A Coleman, C O’Dowd(cptn), Joe Henry(0.1), C Gorman, S Barrett, R Connolly(0.9), D McCormack, C McCormack(0.1), James Henry, E O’Dowd(0.1), K McDonagh, C Davey. Subs: D Coleman(0.2) for K McDonagh, C Marren for C McCormack, S Wimms, F Gallagher, B Kennedy.

This will be viewed as one that got away from C/M after dominating for long periods but the old adage of converting chances when on top in a game rings true for this team. Lessons to be learned, no doubt, but this talented bunch will have better days and better results ahead.
