Reports

Great Day in Creggs last Saturday for Mini Rugby teams
Mini Rugby pictures from last Saturday v Carrick-on-Shannon RFC and Tuam RFC, played in Creggs and Donamon.
Last Saturday (5-11-11) saw the Mini Rugby teams of Tuam RFC and Carrick On Shannon RFC visit the Green on what turned out to be a very successful Blitz.
Creggs have very encouraging numbers at all underage levels with a lot of players who are new to the game and it was a great experience for those players to experience visiting teams in very bright and sunny conditions in the Green Saturday.
Creggs Beginners team of 6/7 year olds played against a team of similar age from Tuam, while the older U8's also played against Tuam.
The Creggs U9/U-10/and U-11's played games against both Carrick on Shannon and Tuam. While Creggs had two U12 teams and each of those teams played Tuam and Carrick.
Creggs would like to thank all the coaches who turned up on the day and made it a great success and all the parents who turned up and those that provided food for the visiting teams.

U-15 REPORT:

Connacht U-15 Cup Quarter Final

Creggs 22 – Ballina 5

Creggs U15 team advanced to the Connacht U15 cup semi-finals’ with a hard fought win over a committed Ballina team last Sunday. The final score did not accurately portray the closeness of the contest as Creggs had to battle hard all the way. Ballina had the benefit of a strong breeze in the first half but it was Creggs who dominated the early exchanges. Creggs interchanged passes between centres Donal Kelly and Colum Fallon and Connor Gore made a number of thrusts up the wing. We failed to recycle the possession quickly enough and too often the final pass was inaccurate. Brian Diffley with the help of Matthew Butt and Mark Dolan drove to the Ballina line but we failed to score off the ruck. Ballina entered the Creggs 25 near the end of the first half and a series of drives saw their prop forward Jack Irwin score in the corner. They failed to convert and the half-time whistle blew. The second half saw Creggs dominate proceedings and Simon Spain, James Walker and Michael Kelly established a strong presence at scrum time. Finally our first try arrived when quick ruck ball from Brian Collins and James Regan saw the ball moved from Kevin Gavin to Donal Kelly to wing Richard Hughes who made it over the try line. Kevin Gavin kicked a great conversion with the aid of the crossbar. More pressure enabled Brian Diffley to block down and he ran under the posts. Shane Dowd converted. Finally in the last few minutes, Kevin Gavin edged Creggs further ahead with a penalty following good work by Robbie Daly, Alex Syrek to Tomas Clayton and John Keegan. Then a good drive by Mark Dolan saw centre Colum Fallon who was man of the match cross for his first try under the posts. Shane Dowd converted for a final score of 22 points to five. The semi-final against Corinthians or Galwegians takes place in Creggs in two weeks time. Training Wednesday at 7pm.

Panel: S. Spain, J. Walker, M. Kelly, J. Regan, B. Collins, M. Butt, M. Dolan, B. Diffley, K. Gavin, S. Dowd, C. Gore, C. Fallon, D. Kelly, R. Hughes, T. Clayton, J. Keegan, A. Syrek, R. Daly, M. Ward, D. Ward.

UNDER 19

Report

Creggs u U19s played an entertaining friendly versus Longford on Saturday night in Creggs.  The Longford team are still involved in the Leinster U19 cup and they started the game in that mode with the Creggs boys struggling to come to terms with the Longford physicality and athleticism.  At half time we were three tries to nil down and only for some brave tackling matters would have been worse.  The second half saw a different Creggs mindset as they took the game to Longford and began to play continuity rugby, displaying no little skill.  In that half Creggs outscored Longford three tries to one, all tries of high quality.  The U19s are still involved in the Connacht 19s plate competition and based on the evidence of that second half and considering that Creggs had at least  another ten quality players unavailable, this squad can compete with anyone left in the draw.  Another point to note is that two of of the team that played against Longford were U17 and ten of them were U18.

As a finishing remark two of the three U19s on display could step up to the senior Creggs side for their next Junior league fixture, so there is no doubting the future for the club and that should begin with the best coaches/managers put in charge of next seasons 19s squad with training to commence in September as opposed to February.  Some training gear, access to physio, a few good away friendlies and one never knows.

19s squad:  Shane O Beirne, David Hoare,  Richard O Grady,  Mike Tiley,  Calum Hartley, Michael McNeill,  Enda Tully,  Aidan Leech,  Andrew Callaghan,  Niall O Rourke,  Eoin Gilleran,  Kieran Shaw,  David Feeny,  Gavin Moran,  Stephen Kilcommins.
