U-13 RESULT & MATCH REPORT:

Great Creggs win in Under-13 Supermacs Connacht Cup

Creggs Rugby  8     Galwegians RFC  7

Creggs Under-13’s had to come from behind to beat Galwegians RFC in a very competitive Supermacs Under-13 Connacht Cup game played in Creggs last Sunday afternoon.

It is a credit to both teams on a heavy pitch that the game was so open and committed and indeed was in the balance right up to the final whistle.

Creggs began the game brightly and had the better of the early exchanges with a couple of opportunities to get over the line only to be defied by a bad bounce or pass to foil their efforts. Creggs had to wait until the 12th minute to take the lead after an infringement at the breakdown gave Ronan Dowd the opportunity to take the 3 points on offer, and he took the score very well.

Galwegians then took the game to Creggs and were competing well at the breakdowns and forcing Creggs to fight for the ball at every occasion and at every possible opportunity put Creggs back into their own half.
With 7 minutes to go to half-time Galwegians attacked a Creggs lineout and took possession of the ball and through the forwards gained good territory in the Creggs 22 , but they were denied a try when good Creggs defence held them up when a try looked a certainty.
From the ensuing 5 metre scrum Galwegians picked from the back of the scrum and after a series of pick and drives, Ronan Corless dived over for the games opening try, which was also converted by Ewan Heapes to give Galwegians a 7-3 half-time lead.

Creggs had the better of the territory in the second half and never gave their opponents the opportunity or time to get out of their own half. Creggs were also now competing much better upfront and excellent play from Brian Maloney, James Brandon and Thomas Hester kept their opponents on the back foot. In the backs, Ronan Dowd, Cian Gately and Shane Purcell kicked well and kept their opponents in their own 22 at every occasion.

Creggs continued to keep on the pressure and after a series of 5 metre scrums, they took the lead when scrum half Michael Hanly picked and dived over from close range to give Creggs an 8-7 Lead.

Creggs had to hold out for the last 5 minutes but in truth their line was never tested and it finished with a deserved victory.

U-14 RESULT & MATCH REPORT:

Creggs draw with Ballinasloe RFC in Supermacs Connacht Under-14 Cup

Creggs Rugby  12     Ballinasloe RFC  12

Our under-14 team held on for a 12 - 12l draw at home to favorites Ballinasloe in the Quarter-Final of the Supermacs Connacht Cup on Sunday.

Creggs dominance of the first half was based on aggressive defense with our midfield backs coming up fast and the backrow tackling hard. These tactics kept Ballinasloe on the back foot and with territorial advantage Brian Diffley broke the deadlock on 8 minutes with a try on the left hand side duly converted by out-half Michael Farrell.

Creggs continued the pressure and towards the end of the first half, after some delightful handling, a great backline move ended with Conor Shanagher getting over in the corner. Michael Farrell was wide with the difficult conversion from a very difficult angle.

So at the turned, Creggs had a deserved 12 – 0 lead. However, the game turned early in the second when strong tackling inside centre Mark Dolan departed with a recurrence of a shoulder injury.

The Creggs boys lost some of their intensity and confidence, which allowed Ballinasloe back into the game. Two relatively easy tries and a conversion brought it level.

However to their credit, Creggs finished strong and were unlucky not to finish off a barnstorming Brian Diffley break at the finish.  The replay will be in two weeks and hopefully with a fully fit squad we can prevail.

Meanwhile, Ballinasloe play Ballina in the Connacht League final next weekend.
