Dublin Minors advance in the championship

November 8, 2018

DUBLIN 0-22 CARLOW 2-14

Dublin minor hurlers snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when two injury-time points saw them to victory in this ESB Leinster MHC qualifier at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow on Saturday afternoon.
The Dubs now face Wexford in the provincial semi-final at Parnell Park on June 26.
Dublin had a nightmare opening to the game and trailed 1-4 to 0-0 inside the opening six minutes before recovering with points from Dean Flood (three, two frees) and Danny Sutcliffe got their side up and running on their way to trailing 0-8 to 1-8 by the interval.
Alan McDonald capitalised on some hesitancy in the Dublin defence to flick to the net in the opening minutes as Carlow started by far the more composed side with free-taker John Doyle punishing any indiscretions by the Dubs.
McDonald almost grabbed an early second goal but was denied by a fine Eamon Dillon save.
In the second half Dublin found their rhythm with the advantage of the wind and hit eight points in succession to move into a lead.
Naoise Maguire got the first of these scores in the 32nd minute but it was Danny Sutcliffe who showed leadership and took control of the game to strike over some sublime long range scores.
However, a second McDonald goal did arrive in the 45th minute and further points from Ross Smithers, the impressive Daryl Roberts and Peter Shaw saw Carlow regain the lead.
With Dublin looking like they could be heading out of the 2010 Championship Dean Flood (two, one free) and Aodhán Clabby grabbed late, late scores to see the Dubs survive, but only just.
