Dubs start league in flying fashion

November 8, 2018

DUBLIN 1-12 KERRY 1-10

Dublin got the NFL Division 1 campaign off to a great start when they returned from Killarney with two points in the bag after a stirring performance in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.
This victory was the Dubs first away league win against Kerry since November 1982 as they stood strong in the face of a late siege from the reigning league and All-Ireland champions.
From the opening whistle Dublin signalled their intent with the highly influential Eamon Fennell kicking the opening point in the 14th second.
With David Henry operating as an extra defender the Dubs needed and did show good composure in possession with the forwards working hard on and off the ball.
The Dublin goal came in the 33rd minute when Ross McConnell delivered a long ball to Michael Darragh MacAuley and he cleverly steered it into the path of Paul Flynn who coolly slotted the ball to the net to help his side to a 1-6 to 0-6 lead.
Flynn stretched the Dublin lead with the opening score of the second half – a period during which the Dublin defence stood strong, denying the men in green and gold the time and space on the ball that they thrive on.
In the 64th minute, with Dublin 1-10 to 0-9 to the good, Declan OSullivan sliced wide with the goal at his mercy after Kieran Donaghy had fielded inside the large square.
Dublin responded with a Bernard Brogan free following a foul on MacAuley and in an action-packed final few minutes the visitors held out for a deserved victory despite a 72nd minute goal from Barry John Walsh.
