Dubs win two challenge games

November 8, 2018

Dublin senior hurlers recorded two challenge game victories over the weekend as they crank up their prepartions for 2011.
The Dubs play the winners of Westmeath v Antrim in the Walsh Cup on January 23 (Dublin will be minus about ten college-tied hurlers) ahead of their League campaign and weekend victories over NUIG, last year’s Fitzgibbon Cup champions (their first success since 1980), and current Ulster club champions, Loughgiel (Antrim) will have helped eradicate some of the early season cobwebs from the system.
On Friday night Conal Keaney impressed on his return to the Dublin hurling team with Shane Durkin and Daire Plunkett also showing up well in the Dubs 4-17 to 1-11 victory while on Sunday a more experimental team defeated Loughgiel 2-20 to 1-15 with Robbie Mahon (Craobh Chiarain) and Conor McCormack (Ballyboden St Enda’s) grabbing the goals.
Thomas Connolly, younger brother of Dublin senior football Diarmuid, scored two points (one free) after being drafted into the team for the day as were Robbie Mahon and Jack Doughan (Kilmacud Crokes).
McMahon grabbed his opportunity with both hands and scored 1-3 as did McCormack, his goal coming in the 64th minute when he bustled through the Loughgiel defence before firing to the net.
Connolly operated at corner-forward in a line including the experienced duo of Shane Ryan (0-1) and David O’Callaghan (0-4, 0-1f).
