"Dundalk Was The Best Option for Me" - Shields

November 8, 2018

Chris Shields says that Dundalk was “the best option” for him, after he made the “tough” decision to leave Bray Wanderers following over 100 appearances for the Seagulls, with the youngster believing that it was “time to move on”.

The 21-year-old Clondalkin native spent ten years at Saint Francis before moving to Bray in 2008, where he captained the U20s before making his first-team debut under Eddie Gormley at the age of 18, going on to become a regular in the side.

But now, Shields, who had a brief encounter with Seán McCaffrey at a training camp for the Irish U19s in 2009, is looking forward to working under the former Republic of Ireland underage boss at Oriel Park.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Dundalk and to have a change, having been with Bray for the last three years,” Shields told dundalkfc.com.

“I was happy when Seán got in contact with me because Dundalk are a good club, and hopefully a club on the up.

“I had two or three phone calls from other clubs, but I met with Seán a week-and-a-half ago, I liked the sound of things and he offered me a good deal. Dundalk seemed to be the best option for me.

“It was difficult leaving Bray because I have a good relationship with Pat (Devlin) and Jack O’Neill down there. I’ve been down there since I was 17 and I’ve done a lot for the club and made a lot of appearances.

“It was tough to leave but I felt it was time to move on.”
