JUNIOR A :

Our Junior A team drew with Ballinameen`s 1st team in their first round championship game in Orchard Park on Sunday evening. Scores were hard to come by in the first half with Elphin missing some good scoring chances. Seanie O`Beirne was unlucky to see a great shot crash off the crossbar towards the end of the half. Balliameen edged ahead thanks to accurate free taking to leave the half time score 0-2 to 0-5 to the visitors.
Elphin were given hope in the 2nd half when Ronan Beirne found the net to close the gap but Elphin were still not taking the scoring opportunities that were coming their way while the visitors were making the most of any chances that came they got. With time nearly up and  Ballinameen 3 points to the good it looked like they would claim the 2 points. However Elphin managed to break up a Ballinameen attack to launch one more of their own. The ball found its way to Seanie O`Beirne who found the back of the net to level matters. Final score Elphin 2-05 Ballinameen 0-11.
Elphin now play St. Croan 2nd team in the last group game.

TEAM: B. Oates, K. Beirne, B. Neary, B. Finn, G. Brady, M. Travers, M. Callery, D. Hynes, G. Cregg, S. O`Beirne, M. McCaffrey, C.Nerney, M. Cregg, Dermot Neary, R. Beirne.

ELPHIN LADIES GAA NOTES:

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Elphin 2-3 St Faithleachs 1-5

Elphin had their first match in the junior championship on Sunday last in Ballyleague against St Faitheachs. A strong crossfield wind made conditions very difficult and scores hard to come by. Elphin started strongly with a point from Orla King and a goal from Joan Gunn. Faithleachs replied with two points before a Faithleachs goal from a penalty put the teams level. Faithleachs point just before half time left the interval score St Faithleach’s 1-3 Elphin 1-2.

Elphin got a great boost early in the second half with a goal from Fiona McCann  and a free from Orla King but two st faithleachs points left the minimum between the teams. Both teams had chances to score but some great defending and wasteful shooting left the final score St Faithleachs 1-5 Elphin 2-3.

Elphin put in a great team performance with all seventeen girls playing their part in a famous win. Martha Taylor was very assured in goals while the defence was well marshalled by Anne Marie Hourigan and Katie Killoran. Sheila Gunn and Orla Glancy played well in the middle third while the scores from Orla King and Fiona McCann were vital to the success.

Training for the team continues on Tuesday’s at six and Thursday at 7.30. New players welcome. The teams next game is against St Dominics on Sunday next in Orchard Park.

TEAM: Martha Taylor, Katie Killoran, Anne Marie Hourigan, Cheree Hook, Christine Glancy, Sheila Gunn, Sarah Lambert, Orla Glancy, Deborah Beirne, Claire Ames, Fiona McCann (1-1), Anna Higgins, Alison Ganley, Joan Gunn (1-0), Orla King (0-2)
