Senior Day
Fethard & District Day Care Centre will hold a Senior Day on Friday 25th July from 11am. The chiropodist will attend at a cost of €10. The district nurse will also be in attendence. A hot meal will be served and €5 is the cost for the service provided.
Fethard Walled Town Medieval Festival
A Fancy Dress Parade through the town is scheduled to start at 2pm and will be led by heraldic shields made by local primary school children, hunting horns and Irish Wolfhounds. A competition will be held for the best-dressed medieval costume in the parade. Prizes will be awarded to: Best Male Adult, Best Female Adult, Best Male Child and Best Female Child.
The parade will culminate in a medieval fair by the town walls to include events such as battle re enactments and traditional craft stalls such as silver smithing, weaving, wood carving and turning, basket making, leather working, butter making, willow work and a Farmers market.
There will also be street entertainers including puppeteers, a chance to try your hand at archery, music by local bands and The Lee Valley Band as well as visiting Medieval French musicians. Food will be available on the day. A large colourful Shell Mandala will be created by the Town Wall during the day also. So come along and celebrate Fethard’s rich heritage and the last few days of the summer.
The Fethard Walled Town Medieval Festival is organised by Fethard & Killusty Community Council and part funded by the Heritage Council of Ireland, Failte Ireland and South Tipperary County Council. In conjunction with the day, South Tipperary County Museum are hosting a colouring competition for 6 year olds and over. Entries are available from the County Museum, Mick Delahunty Square, and in local Newspapers.
Completed entries must be submitted to the County Museum by 4pm on Saturday 16th August. Make sure to put name, address and telephone number on reverse. Battle of the Bands
A Battle of the Bands will take place in the Walled Garden at McCarthy’s on Saturday 23rd August in conjunction with Fethard Walled Town Medieval Festival. Bands that wish to enter can send a demo to Vincent (Jasper) at McCarthy’s or to Premier Music Store in Clonmel. Ten bands will be chosen to battle it out. The entry fee is €50 per band, payable if the band is accepted into the competition. First prize is studio time to record a demo with a professional sound engineer.
Main Street Pile Up
Was medieval Fethard built to accommodate large trucks? Maybe if Madam’s Gate wasn’t removed in the 1900s to accommodate the traffic of the day, we wouldn’t have seen the current situation photographed on Monday last in Fethard where a large truck entangled in a car as he tried to manoeuvre lower Main Street.
Wolfe Tones in concert
The Wolfe Tones will appear in concert in Cloneen on Friday 25th July and a small amount of tickets are available and can be had by ringing 086-0834208 immediately. Tickets to be collected should be done by Friday 18th as no tickets will be kept for anyone and no entry at door on night.
Coming 1st November for a Halloween Party Night are the brilliant Kaye Twins big brass and salsa band. Tickets limited, more details on this later
Change of time
Senator Phil Prendergast’s Clinic in the Fr. Tirry Centre, Fethard, will now be held at 10am, Saturday 26th July 2008 instead of 2pm as previously advertised, to facilitate the Labour Party Selection Convention for the European Elections in Silversprings Hotel, Cork.
Tag Rugby Festival
Fethard Rugby Club are hosting a Tag Rugby Festival over the first three Friday nights in August. Entertainment has been organised after each session in a local pub with barbecue on the final night. The rules are simple: you have to be over 35; 10 players per team – each team must have 1 female player (aged 30 and over) and entry is €100 per team.

Fethard Macra

A very pleasant evening was had by all participating in our card night in McCarthys on Friday, 11th July. We’d like to thank everyone who attended on the night and most especially all of the local businesses who so kindly and generously sponsored the event. Excellent music and song was provided later in the evening by our extremely talented local group ‘The Pheasant Pluckers’.
Club members took part in the ‘Donkey Derby’ in the Clonmel Show on July 6th. This was a very enjoyable event for all participating club members. The raft race, which was due to take place last week, has been postponed until August. Further details later. Events taking place in the next few weeks include the annual ‘Miss Macra’ festival taking place in Dundrum during the first weekend in August. This is an event on the Macra calendar not to be missed.

The late Nessa Shine
The death occurred recently at St Joseph’s Hospice, London, of Nessa Shine (nee O’Donovan), late of Forest Green, London and Burke Street, Fethard. Nessa (82), was the daughter of Denis and Mary O’Donovan, Burke Street. She was predeceased by her brothers Andy (Burke Street), John (The Valley) and sister Meta (Dunlavin, Co Wicklow).
In the 1940s Nessa met Ben Shine, who came from Cork to work in Killerk Creamery. The couple later married and lived on Barrack Street where they had two children, Jim and Benny.
The family moved to London in the 1950s, but Nessa never forgot her roots. A regular visitor to Fethard, she spent holidays at Burke Street with her sister-in-law, the late Gretta O’Donovan, surrounded by family and friends. A subscriber to the annual newsletter, she also kept up to date with the Fethard community notes.
Following Requiem Mass at St Anthony’s Church, Forest Gate, burial was in East London cemetery.
Nessa is survived by her sons Jim and Benny; daughters-in-law Siobhan and Cathy; sister Ann (Lucey) Main Street, Fethard; grandchildren; great-grandchildren: other relatives and friends. A Mass for Nessa will be celebrated in the Abbey Church at 5pm on this Friday 18th July.
Tennis Camp for boys and girls
A Tennis Camp for boys and girls from the ages of 7 to 16 will take place in Fethard Sports Centre from Monday 21st July to Friday 25th July. The camp will take place every morning from 10am to 12.30pm and children willing to take part are asked to give their names to coach, Tony McCarthy Tel: 086 3809397.
Congratulations to Sister Philomena and Sister Annunciata
Congratulations to Sister Philomena and Sister Annunciata on celebrating their recent jubilees. I used to visit you at the convent for afternoon tea when my mother Josie (McCarthy) Fennell and my aunt Mary (McCarthy) Gavin used to visit you on their trips home from England. Sister Terasita, Sister Carmel and Sister Thomas (my teacher) in the baby class would also join us. I have so many memories of my time spent in your company and the walks around the grounds. In those days the nuns didn’t come out on to the street you would meet us at the lodge where Mr & Mrs Power lived and walk us up the path and steps into the grounds or we would enter the convent via the gate at the back of the Parish Church, passed the laundry and join you all in the gardens. Tea would be served in the sitting room and we always left with gifts of holy pictures and soap. I loved those visits. Thank you again for the happy memories. May God Bless you both. Fethard GAA Club News
Tipperary fans, Liam Frewen and friends photographed before leaving Fethard for the Munster final on Sunday in his car, especially dressed up for the occasion.
Our Minor Footballers play their semifinal on this Wednesday against Commercials and on Saturday 19th July we play Minor B Hurling in Monroe against Kilsheelan at 7pm. On Monday 21st July we are out in the losers section of the Under 21 B Hurling when we play Knockmealdown Gaels in Clonmel at 7.45pm.
We wish Paul Fitzgerald and Cian Maher the best of luck in the qualifier on Saturday in Ardfinnan at 3pm and also to Aiden Fitzgerald in the Intermediate Hurling final in Thurles on Wednesday 23rd July against Limerick.
The Lotto Jackpot was not won. The numbers drawn were5, 6, 9 and 11 and we had four Match Three winners who all receive €40: Maura Ryan (Kilnockin, Fethard), Martin Burke (Main Street, Fethard), Rita Kennedy (c/o Merrys, Clonmel), Monica O’Shea (Woodvale Walk, Fethard). Killusty Dog Show & Fancy Dress Results

Unfortunately the weather that was forecast came to pass as the Dog and Fancy Dress sections at Killusty Pony Show were just getting under way. It meant that all competitors and judges got a good wetting before the classes were finished. That said the standard was higher than ever in both the Dog Show and the Fancy Dress. There had been a great deal of effort put into preparation and it certainly showed. While entries for the Dog Show were slightly down no doubt due to the weather forecast, there were more and more innovative Fancy Dress competitors than ever. Jim Quinlan, Huntsman of the Golden Vale Hunt, was meticulous in his judging of the dogs as was Mrs Bernie Maher owner of Opera in Fethard who judged the many and varied entrants in the Fancy Dress. They were both very complimentary as to the standard of entry.

An Bord Pleanála upholding refusal of bio-fuel plant in Rosegreen, Tipperary is major source of relief and very welcome
Local T.D. Tom Hayes today welcomes the decision of An Bord Pleanála to uphold the original refusal of permission for GOE Organics to create a bio-fuel and bio-diesel production plant in Rosegreen, a small village in Co. Tipperary. The digester was planned break down 250,000 tonnes of livestock offal and by-product and produce gas, and was reported to be five times the size of any comparable operation in Europe. There has been strong and concerted effort from locals to oppose this plant, which was rejected for the site by the South Tipperary County Council originally in 2007 due to the size and scale of the project, the type of waste produced, and the ability of local infrastructure and roads to cope with the project.
Local T.D. Tom Hayes made a submission against the plant, along with many other locals.
‘I am delighted and relieved to see that An Bord Pleanála have refused permission for this bio-fuel and bio-diesel production plant to be built in Rosegreen. There were many reasons why this plant was utterly unsuitable for the area – including the size and scale of the project, the potential damage to the equine, agricultural and tourism industries locally, the level of local dissatisfaction with the plan, and the inability of local roads to cope with the traffic, smells, and potential environmental risks of such a plant,’ Deputy Hayes said today.
‘As someone living a mere five miles from the planned site, I have heard the major concerns of other locals for some time. I was pleased to be able to make a submission at the oral hearing on the issue this year, as I got the opportunity to reflect what my constituents felt on the issue. I think that this was emphatically the right decision to make and I know that many people will sleep easier in their beds tonight knowing that this long saga is finished. People in South Tipperary were greatly worried for their health, the environment and local industries which stood to be damaged and they can now rest knowing that their concerns were heard and validated,’ Tom Hayes continued.
‘People today told me that they could not sleep for worrying what the project would do to house prices in the area, along with the possible health issues, which they were very frightened about. I welcome this upholding of the Council’s decision and the sensible thinking behind it,’ Deputy Hayes concluded.
