Action plan to develop Fethard as major tourist attraction

Consultants have drawn up an action plan to transform the medieval walled town of Fethard into a tourist destination of national significance. Conservation of the town’s historic walls, the development of a walking route around the walls, the upgrading of the town’s river walk and building a tourism visitor centre are among the projects proposed in the 15 point action plan devised by The Paul Hogart Company. The company was commissioned by South Tipperary Co. Council to conduct a ‘Public Realm’ study of Fethard’s tourism needs.

James Hennessy of the Paul Hogart Company gave a presentation on their findings at this month’s Co. Council meeting and outlined a 15 point plan of middle to long term projects to develop Fethard’s tourism potential. He told councillors that Fethard was a ‘treasure trove’ of historical attractions and had ‘world class’ tourism potential as it was one of the few intact medieval walled towns.

The aim of their plan was to elevate Fethard to a tourist attraction of ‘national significance’ as part of a network of historic towns. Top of the list of projects in the Public Realm action plan for the town is to conserve the town walls as a matter of urgency and preserve the historical gateways.

It is proposed to create a walking route around the circuit of the walls, improve the approach roads to the town, carry out a series of landscaping projects and showcase the town’s heritage sites at night with artistic lighting.

Also included in the plan is a proposal to improve and extend the town’s river walk, which the consultants describe as a ‘fantastic asset’ to the town. And the consultants have suggested the establishment of a ‘tourism gateway facility’, which will be tourists’ first port of call to find out information on the town’s history and where to find the heritage sites. Other initiatives listed in the action plan are increasing tourism accommodation, encouraging residents to improve their home and business frontages, promoting equine activities and the town’s associations with the equine industry and improving traffic flow and accessibility.

Mr Hennessy said Fethard was undergoing a period of change with a lot of new housing built in the town. It was important to consider the character and design of this type of development so it didn’t compromise the town’s character, he stressed.
He also stressed that it was essential that this plan was not ‘just pie in the sky’.

‘The Council has formed an implementation group for the public realm action plan and it will be working with the Heritage Council and Tourism Ireland to secure funding to implement it,’ he informed councillors. Cllr. Jimmy O’Brien said he hoped the plan would be a ‘stepping stone’ for Fethard’s future and agreed with the study’s finding that more tourism accommodation was needed in the town.

Fethard was one of the finest examples of a medieval walled town and it had huge potential for tourism, he added.

Purple Haze
LavenderNoel and Mary Colville have cultivated a beautiful Lavender hedge on the driveway to their home at Ballintemple. Mary says, the hedge has taken five years to mature and this year’s bloom is the best yet. The Lavender flowers don’t last too long but create a wonderful display when in full bloom.

Lavender

Lavenders are widely grown in gardens. Flower spikes are used for dried flower arrangements. The fragrant, pale purple flowers and flower buds are used in potpourris to give a fresh fragrance to homes. The plant is also grown commercially for extraction of lavender oil from the flowers. This oil is used as an antiseptic and for aromatherapy. Lavender flowers yield abundant nectar which yields a high quality honey for beekeepers. Lavender is also used as a herb, either alone or as an ingredient of herbes de Provence. Lavender is also used to flavour sugar, the product being called ‘lavender sugar’, and the flowers are sometimes sold in a blend with black tea, as ‘lavender tea’.

Great support for Leg Waxing

On Sunday night last the Castle Inn was buzzing with excitement as lots of young men bared their legs to have them waxed by expert Carly Walsh, who enjoyed watching their brave faces, knowing the suffering hidden underneath. Well to their credit, a tremendous grand total of €3,571 was raised on the night without a whimper of complaint. Some of the lads really enjoyed the bare feeling and went one step further and had their heads shaved, and others their chest and armpits.

Proprietor of the Castle Inn, Noel Sharpe, also joined in and agreed to have his well-nurtured moustache taken off for the cause. The crowd failed to convince Deputy Mattie McGrath to shed a few hairs but his party was well supported with the earlier attendance of Cllr Siobhán Ambrose and future candidate Benny Tynan. Annette O’Donovan helped with the head shaves while punters queued up with donations to tear strips of wax and hair from the willing victims. A great crowd came and supported the event, which was run in aid of Childline, a charity dedicated to all children and young people up to the age of 18 years in Ireland. Well done to all concerned! Fethard Macra going from strength to strength!

What a busy month Fethard Macra has in store! To kick off with club members are organizing a raft for the annual Raft Race taking place in Golden on 5th July. Once again this year promises to be a splashing time for all involved so don’t forget your raincoat and brolly! On Sunday, 6th July we are taking part in the Donkey Derby in the Clonmel Show. This event is always great fun especially for the spectators!

Fethard Macra is looking forward to hosting the only ‘Know Your Neighbour’ event taking place in South Tipp this year. ‘KYN’ is a nationwide Macra event sponsored by the ESB. The goal is that in this frantic, hectic, busy world of ours that we take a little time out to get to know our neighbour. To that end we are pleased to announce that in support of ‘Fethard Acorn Childcare Committee’ we are hosting a ‘Variety Card Night’ in McCarthy’s Hotel, Fethard on Friday, 11th July at 9pm. Prize games of ‘Progressive 25’ and ‘Poker’ will be played and also games of ‘In-between’ and ‘21’ to mention a few. Top prizes on the night will be up to €100 with spot prizes galore. So come along, get to know your neighbours, support two great ventures and have a fun night out whether observing or participating.

We also actively encourage any of our neighbours or anybody interested in joining our Macra club from surrounding parishes such as Killenaule, Drangan and Cloneen to come along on the night. We welcome our four new members to the club and encourage and welcome any more new and potential members. For further information contact Michael at Tel: 087-9019443 or Una at Tel: 087-6882683.

Badgers Over-30s Soccer Club
Apologies for this late entry, which is like my game, sometimes a bit behind. Our AGM was held on 9th May, at which all the officers were re-elected bar one, belated congratulations to Kevin “O” Dwyer on his appointment as Chairman.

The season has begun well with another victory over the Clonmel post office team last week. On our return to the community field from Killenaule there were some rumbles of complaint that the ground was a bit hard. Thankfully, or not, those rumbles have ceased with the advent of a wet and windy end to the month. Nevertheless, numbers have dwindled slightly and there is absolutely no excuse as the European Cup is now finished. All over 30s are welcome to come and try out every Wednesday night from 8pm til 9.30ish. It’s a great work out and the craic is good too. But don’t take my word for it!

Thanks for your support
Sr. Winnie wishes to thank very sincerely all those who sponsored her, together with Srs. Betty, Juliana and Alice Butler in the June bank holiday Women’s Mini marathon. The people of Fethard and surrounding areas have been amazingly generous. The proceeds amounted to €3600 with donations still coming in. A special word of thanks to Alice Butler whose participation and fund raising efforts no doubt enhanced the outcome. Most people are aware, through media coverage these days, of the sorry state of Zimbabwe. There are approximately twenty Presentation Sisters working there at the moment who are enduring extreme shortages and generally very difficult conditions. This sponsorship will be a huge boost in helping to alleviate their many needs.

Where Are You Going On Your Vacation?

Ed Dunphy was going on vacation. He works as a research scientist with a company called Neoclone in Wisconsin in the United States of America. His boss asked him where he was going. He replied that he was going to Ireland and named the usual spots that tourists visit. He also added he was also going to visit a place called Fethard in Co Tipperary. His boss, Deven McGlenn, stunned him when he said that he knew Fethard well, as he had visited quite a few times with his friend Patrick Burke, a native of Fethard who now lives in Milwaukee.  Ed told him that his family are originally from Fethard. Both his grandparents had emigrated from the town in the early years of the 20th Century. His granddad went to New York and his grandmother to Boston. His name was Dunphy and hers was Hannigan. There was a bit of an age gap, so they hadn’t met in Fethard, but a mutual acquaintance in New York introduced them. They married and had fifteen children.

Jump forward a hundred years and Ed Dunphy arrives in the town of his ancestors. His boss, Deven, told him to call to McCarthy’s and look for Patrick’s friend Vinny. He called and they met. And because the name Dunphy was unusual in Fethard, Vinny felt that the family would be easy to trace in the funeral records. So he pulled out the old funeral book. Ed knew that his family lived in a place to the north of the town which started with M. Soon, a Mr Dunphy was located in the funeral book, a native of Monroe who was buried in Rathcoole cemetery. A few minutes later, Annette arrived and said that there was a Dunphy house on the Cashel Road. So Ed went off there to see the home patch and then to the cemetery to find the resting place of his ancestors.  And this all stemmed from a chance conversation in a corridor in Wisconsin. As the old ad said, “It’s good to talk!”
