Annaghdown advanced to the last eight of the senior championship with three points to spare over Barna after extra time in Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening. It was Barna who were first of the mark when Ciaran Hanley goaled inside the first minute as his side went on to add two further points before Mathias Coleman opened our scoring with a point on twenty minutes and his brother Niall doubled our total six minutes later to leave us trailing at the break by 0-2 to 1-3.

The second half started with Barna shooting the first two points but on thirteen minutes Anthony Pender started our fight back with a point and we went on to score five more unanswered points from Joey Farragher, Brendan Dooley, Frankie Burke, Damien Burke and Brian Qualter to leave it all square with five minutes to the break. At this stage we were well in control and should have sealed victory in ordinary time, but for the second time in this years championship, we had to play extra time.

Extra time saw Frankie Burke send over a great point from a very difficult angle and the same player added point from a free mid way through the first period and Niall Coleman had our two final scores, one at the end of the first period and also scored in the second period, as Barna could only score one point in extra time to leave us winners by 0-12 to 1-6.

So Mick Curley and his charges now await to see who they will face in the quarter-finals and he knows that it will take a big improvement in form if we are to advance in the competition, but that said we shot six points in ten minutes on Saturday and if we get a good start in the next round, we could be in business. We had solid displays from Fergal Doherty, Shane Collier, Anthony Pender, Niall Coleman, Joey Farragher, Mathias Coleman and Frankie Burke.

Team was: P O’Neill, F Doherty, S Collier, P Burke, B Qualter, A Fitzpatrick, A Pender, W Fallon, N Coleman, J Farragher, D Burke, P J Fahy, M Coleman, B Dooley and F Burke. Subs B Newell and M O’Neill
