Greenfields Take a Grip on the League Title.

November 8, 2018

Greenfields took a step nearer the Connacht Senior League title with a hard fought draw withGalway 1sts at a chilly Dangan last Saturday evening. One could be forgiven for thinking the Greenfields ladies had their minds on a bigger prize this week and that a sometimes lacklustre display was a preamble to their Irish Hockey Trophy semi-final against Belfast Harlequins in Belfast next Saturday.

Greenfields started sharply and were ahead after two minutes when a cleverly worked short corner move was nudged to the Galway net by Mary Healy. From here on it was backs to the wall as Galway pressed hard but the close “man marking” of Elaine Carey in particular kept Galway at bay. The Greenfields defence was well marshalled by the impeccable Cloda Grealy supported ably by Catherine Moore and the hard working Aine Collins.

The sustained Galway pressure finally paid off late in the second half when Greenfields failed to clear from a crowded goal area and the ball was deflected over the line for a deserved equaliser. Greenfields upped the pace again in search of a winner but good work from Becky Anderson and Elaine Hall failed to produce a winner. The draw puts Greenfields in the driving seat for the title and they now face the trip to Belfast hoping to pull off another great win in the Trophy semi-final.
