Heartbreak again for our Under 14s in County final

November 7, 2018

Having defeated Knockavilla-Kickhams comprehensively in the Co. Semi Final in New Inn on wednesday evening last our Under 14 hurlers qualified to play Moycarkey Borris in the county under 14 "C" final in Boherlahan on saturday last. St. Patrick's got the opening score when James Fitzgerald tapped over a fine point but our lead was short lived as Moycarkey found the net with a long ball from mid field. However our lads battled hard and 3 frees converted by Frank meagher had us back on level terms. The final score of the half was a point for Moycarkey which gave them a 1 point lead at the half time break. The second half start well for St. Pats as they started to get more ball into their forwards. Points from Conor Duggan, Pauric O'Brien and two more points from frees for Frank Meagher put us 4 points ahead as the game entered the last ten minutes. Indeed St. Pats had a number of goal opportunities to finish of the game at this stage but the Moycarkey defence battled hard and kept the ball out. A moycarkey point from a free brought the lead back to 3 points and then disaster struck for St. Pats as Moycarkey pounced for two goals. Now 3 points down St. Pats were chasing the game and almost forced a draw but a superb goal effort from James Fitzgerald was saved over the bar by the Moycarkey goalie. The final whistle blew and moycarkey were crowned champions on a scoreline of Moycarkey 3-3 to St. Pats 0-10. This was a disappointing end to the game for the St. Pats lads as they just didn't get the rub of the green when needed. A hand injury to centre back Eoin Ryan in the first half didn't help our cause either but all credit to moycarkey who never gave up and as is so often the case goals win matches.

The team was: Adam Cuddihy, Quinn Moran, Jack Meagher, Patrick Griffin, James Horan, Eoin Ryan, Dara Hall, Conor Duggan (Captain), Pauric O’Brien, Dale Murphy, Frank Meagher, James Fitzgerald, Mikie O’Brien, Seán Ryan, Ben Hennessy, Thomas O’Brien and Cathal Foley.

We thank our under 14 players for giving us a great year of action winning south titles in both football and hurling and reaching the county final in both codes. Thanks to selectors James Ryan, Eamon Hall and Jimmy O’Brien for their time and effort put into this team. Finally thanks to the parents and Grand Parents who drove the players near and far over the last six months and finally to our supporters who were constantly on the road cheering on our boys. I'm sure we'll see more good days from this group of players in the future.
