The Edenderry GAA community and the extended Edenderry community recently lost a wonderful friend in Helen Moriarty after a short illness.
Originally from Dublin, Helen moved with her family to Edenderry some years ago and it was not long before she immersed herself into the Edenderry GAA club and become an integral part in helping grow and develop the ladies section of the club to what it is today.
Helen spend a considerable amount of her time coaching and training the underage girls and would spend countless evenings encouraging and minding the girls as they came and went each season. It is fair to say that most of the current ladies footballers passed through Helen’s hands at some stage in the earlier part of their careers. She was a lady with a big heart and a big smile and was always willing to give her time to whenever it was needed. As well as coaching the young girls Helen could be found washing jerseys, organising tournaments and transporting players to games or county training. Helen also played a huge part in the administration of the club and over the years filled many roles including Chairperson, Secretary and Registrar and in more recent years she was treasurer of the club thus helping to balance the books each year, a task she considered of utmost importance. She also ably represented the club at county board level for many years.
As one would expect from a lady like Helen she bore her illness with great dignity until the end and it was a great thrill for her to see her son Sean win a county medal when Edenderry defeated Clara in the never to be forgotten final of 2011.
Helen will be sorely missed by all in the Edenderry GAA club and indeed by everyone she knew.
